Tendring
The Tendring District has many geographic, demographic and economic characteristics that make it distinctive from other areas. We enjoy over 36 miles of coastline, award-winning sandy beaches, numerous coastal towns providing anything from the traditional pleasures of the seaside to maritime heritage, a variety of beautiful and picturesque villages, one of the busiest harbours in Europe and a number of important wildlife and environmental sites such as The Naze, and Hamford Water, Walton-on-the-Naze; or Stour and Copperas Woods, Wrabness to name a few. Our coastal geography is our greatest asset.
The role
The Council operates a Cabinet system. The successful applicant, whilst studying to gain their qualifications will also be gaining practical experience working with, and supporting their team members, most of whom are either qualified as solicitors or legal executives, in the provision of advice and representation to, and of the Council. As a small team, we cover a variety of areas of law so that the ability to adapt and be flexible is important. Whilst some experience in law and procedures in relation to at least one of the following areas of law property law, contract, planning, housing, or litigation (civil and prosecution) is preferred, it is not essential but a willingness to learn and develop that experience in our main areas of work is essential. In addition to the main areas of work ideally you should have experience in, or a willingness to become experienced in, at least two of the following: code of conduct/standards; commercial; contract and procurement; data protection and FOI/EIR; environment; housing; licensing; planning; or regeneration. Part of the role will involve working with officers in other departments, as well as the members of the legal team, either in advising or in supporting others. As you progress in the role you will learn how to undertake research both for your team members and for other officers across the Council, and you will also learn how to draft and prepare all documentation within your main areas of work, including written advice to our client departments, as well as documents for use in Court proceedings. As your skills develop you will have the ability to deal effectively and professionally with cases both within the Council, and when appropriate to your skills, attending Court on behalf of the Council either with the advocate or, on occasion, undertaking your own advocacy. The ability to analyse matters, to ask the relevant questions and carry out accurate research is essential but as you progress through your training, then with our support and assistance these skills will develop. Occasionally you may be required to attend and support members of your team in providing legal and procedural advice to various Committees, some of which may be in the evenings.
The requirements
We are looking for an interested and ambitious individual who wants to learn and develop into a skilled and effective lawyer, and a good communicator. A level of commitment is required since undertaking the training, and gaining the qualifications, will take a number of years – that will include both level 3 and level 6 qualifications as well as a number of hours of “qualifying experience” that essentially is the time working in the team with us. However, if you’re interested in the law and in local government then this may be the role for you. An ability to type will be essential.
