An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Nursing Development Team (NDT) at South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust for the post ofEnhanced and Advanced Practice Lead.
This is a great opportunity for a qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner who has an interest and experience in management, teaching and education of nursing workforce and who would like to enhance and develop their career. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the Trust’s nursing workforce, driving professional excellence, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality care through strategic leadership and effective training and development initiatives.
The Enhanced and Advanced Practice Lead at SWLStG will provide strategic and operational leadership for advanced clinical and enhanced nursing practice across the Trust. This role combines education, clinical expertise, workforce development, and governance to foster high standards of clinical practice and advanced patient care. The post holder will collaborate with NHS England (NHSE), Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and other healthcare partners to lead the development and implementation of education, training, and clinical placement strategies for Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and Enhanced Nursing Practitioners (ENPs) within SWLStG.
The role will encompass responsibility for developing and sustaining governance for ACP and ENP roles, creating policies, ensuring alignment with local and national standards, and supporting the four pillars of advanced practice (clinical, leadership, research, and education) to optimize care delivery across SWLStG.

To create the very best environment to care for our patients, this site’s layout will be transformed by 2027 to create a new central plaza and café, plus modern facilities for five new wards. Tolworth has a canteen and is near shops, the A3, Tolworth station, and is a bus ride from Surbiton station, with fast connections to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo.
Clinical Practice Development
• Coordinate and support high-quality clinical placements and bedside supervision for trainee ACPs and ENPs, ensuring educational experiences meet the standards set by NHSE and HEIs.
• Conduct regular placement audits to maintain a safe and effective learning environment, providing direct feedback to trainees, supervisors, and senior nursing teams.
• Ensure placements align with ACP/ENP curriculum objectives, monitor progression through real-time assessments, and implement targeted improvement strategies where needed.
• Establish, implement, and update competency frameworks tailored to ACP and ENP roles, covering clinical skills, patient safety, and professional conduct.
• Collaborate with HEIs to design an educational roadmap for trainees, ensuring all four pillars of advanced practice (clinical, leadership, research, and education) are integrated within competency assessment tools.
• Provide training for clinical supervisors and assessors on competency frameworks, reinforcing consistency in evaluation practices Trust-wide.
• Lead the creation, implementation, and regular review of ACP and ENP governance policies, including Patient Group Directives (PGDs) and clinical guidance specific to ACP/ENP roles.
• Monitor adherence to national Advancing Practice standards and Trust protocols, ensuring policies are updated in response to legislative or regulatory changes.
• Establish a regular policy review cycle, engaging key stakeholders, includingACP and ENP workforce, managers,Heads of Nursing and Service Delivery and Chief Nurse and, to promote governance and policy compliance.
• Lead and collaborate on ACP/ENP-led research projects that align with Trust priorities and service needs, encouraging evidence-based practice and knowledge dissemination through presentations, publications, and conferences.
• Develop quality improvement projects specific to advanced practice, ensuring measurable outcomes that contribute to service improvement, patient safety, and staff development.
• Actively promote and support ACPs and ENPs in developing skills in research methodology, evidence appraisal, and quality improvement processes.
Education and Workforce Development
• Work with Trust leadership to assess current and future workforce needs, guiding the commissioning of ACP/ENP roles that support service changes and workforce expansion.
• Coordinate with Heads of Nursing and other internal stakeholders to oversee the full cycle of ACPs and ENPs workforce planning, including recruitment, induction, and commissioning of training contracts with HEIs.
• Manage and analyse ACPs and ENPs workforce data, providing insights to inform commissioning decisions and ensuring Trust alignment with workforce targets and financial objectives.
• Develop and facilitate workshops, seminars, and training modules for ACPs and ENPs to support their progression through training pathways, addressing clinical, educational, and leadership skill sets.
• Coordinate the design and implementation of annual assessments for trainee ACPs and ENPs, ensuring multi-source feedback mechanisms that provide holistic evaluations.
• Ensure ACP/ENP trainees receive support and guidance, participating in formative and summative assessment processes and overseeing completion of mandatory competencies.
• Lead the maintenance of a comprehensive database for ACP and ENP staff, tracking their placement progress, competencies achieved, certifications, and revalidation requirements.
• Provide regular reports on ACP/ENP development, workforce impacts, and budget utilisation to theAssociate Director of Nursing Education, Development & Quality,Chief Nurse and other key Trust stakeholders, addressing any performance gaps or compliance issues.
• Collaborate with Learning and Development, Workforce Information and Informatics teams to develop data visualisations and reporting formats that allow for real-time tracking and insights into training outcomes.
• Serve as the main point of contact with NHSE, HEIs, and professional bodies, representing SWLStG in regional and national forums on ACP/ENP development.
• Identify opportunities to enhance Trust reputation through partnerships and benchmarking best practices in advanced clinical and nursing roles.
• Establish and lead ACP/ENP forums and focus groups within the Trust, enabling a collaborative environment for knowledge-sharing, professional development, and peer support among advanced practitioners.
• Act as a mentor and role model for trainee and qualified ACPs and ENPs, promoting leadership development and career progression.
• Provide targeted support to ACPs/ENPs who demonstrate high potential, offering structured mentorship pathways to build leadership, clinical expertise, and research skills.
• Develop professional development programs that support transition from trainee to qualified ACP/ENP and address emerging skills required in response to changing healthcare demands.
• Oversee the budget allocated for ACP and ENP training and development, ensuring effective use of funds to maximise workforce capacity and educational resources.
• Develop resource allocation plans in collaboration withAssociate Director of Nursing Education, Development & Qualityand finance team, monitoring expenditure and adjusting training allocations in response to budgetary constraints.
• As required, present financial and performance reports to the Trust Board and HEE, identifying cost-saving strategies and areas for investment in advanced practice roles.
Research, Quality, and Governance
• Lead the establishment and maintenance of a governance framework for ACP and ENP roles, ensuring alignment with national and Trust policies for clinical governance, professional standards, and regulatory compliance.

• Coordinate the development of Trust policies on ACP and ENP scope of practice, ethics, and patient care protocols in collaboration with theAssociate Director of Nursing Education, Development & Quality, Heads of Nursing, Chief Nurse and other relevant internal stakeholders.
• Act as a Trust representative at governance forums, ensuring ACP/ENP policies and procedures align with NHSE quality standards and contributing to policy updates in response to evolving national guidelines.
• Conduct regular audits of clinical placements and learning environments, assessing placement quality, educational resources, and trainee satisfaction, and preparing actionable reports for senior leadership.
• Develop a feedback loop with ACP/ENP trainees and supervisors, implementing regular surveys and focus groups to capture placement experiences and inform continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with the Quality and Governance teams to ensure robust quality assurance mechanisms are in place, leading on action plans to address identified issues and support the Trust’s quality improvement agenda.
• Facilitate interprofessional learning programs to foster collaboration between ACPs, ENPs, and other healthcare professionals, contributing to integrated, multi-disciplinary care pathways.
• Identify and implement clinical learning models that enhance multi-professional teamwork, coordinating interprofessional case studies, simulations, and project-based learning activities.
• Work with HEIs to incorporate interprofessional education within the ACP/ENP curriculum, encouraging joint projects and placements with other healthcare disciplines.
