The post holder will be encouraged to develop their own research interest/project, which could lead to a higher degree (MD/PhD), and to write grant applications to secure additional external funding for such a project or other research projects conducted in the Unit. It is anticipated that if the post holder is successful in securing funding for a full-time MD/PhD Fellowship that they will cease to hold this Clinical Research Fellowship and seamlessly progress to a full-time MD/PhD Fellowship. The post holder is encouraged to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. The post will be based at Guys Hospital. However, it is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the Trust, either on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.

Support a range of clinical research studies within their clinical expertise being conducted at the Trust. Build excellent relationships and work with individuals and departments across the Trust/partner organisations/staff groups, in particular the Research Nurse/Clinical Research Practitioners within the team and the teams with which we collaborate, to aid the smooth set-up and running of clinical research studies. Assist with the identification of studies potentially suitable for the team portfolio, including advising on specific tasks at the feasibility assessment stage. Be responsible for specific study-related medical decisions within their expertise, and, where appropriate, in consultation with the study Principal Investigator/s and senior Clinical Research Fellows for the studies conducted in the Rheumatology Department. Provide and arrange medical cover for studies in the Rheumatology portfolio, including the management of any related safety concerns. Assist with monitoring visits where required. Arrange localised training, including attendance at study-specific training. Take a leading role in advertising and recruiting to clinical trials. Where appropriate take responsibility for overseeing the management and administration of study drugs for designated studies to healthy volunteers/patients according to local standard operating procedures Maintain accurate and accessible research records and provide formal reports where required. Assist PIs in assessing and reporting adverse events in accordance with the protocol and regulatory requirements. Participate in research meetings and internal seminars. Take part in or conduct any other duties as may be deemed reasonable by the PI. Ensure all competencies and training is up to date for relevant studies and all work complies with Good Clinical Practice.

Clinical Responsibilities Work in conjunction with the Senior Research Nurse/Clinical Trials Coordinator to manage a caseload of patients, whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure service delivery. Assist in screening patients suitable for entry into clinical trials. This may include attending clinics and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings. Identify patients suitable for entry into clinical trials by attending clinics (screening notes/consultant referral) and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings. With other members of the healthcare team, ensure patients are fully informed prior to entry in any clinical trial programme. Assist in consenting, randomising, allocating of treatment of patients. Evaluate patient eligibility for clinical trial entry, co-ordinating pre-study tests, obtaining results and arranging appropriate appointments according to trial protocol. Act as a resource and support to patients and their relatives, explaining practical aspects of clinical trials, assisting and supporting local nursing teams. Coordinate the collection of any blood samples required as part of the clinical trials and ensure safe and appropriate storage of specimens, in conjunction with local nursing teams. Support the administration of trial drugs (commensurate with education and training), be aware of and report any unusual side effects, in association with local nursing teams. Maintain adequate patients records and ensure all relevant information is documented in the patients medical and nursing notes. Responsible for accurate completion of Case Report Forms (CRFs). Responsible for the collection, co-ordination and computerisation of data generated from the clinical trials. Provide continuity of care for patients and their carers throughout the trial programme. Provide specific advice and support as appropriate. Implement and adhere to the principles of GCP (Good Clinical Practice) as set out in the Clinical Trials Regulations. If appropriately trained, keep up to date with current practices for cannulation, phlebotomy and care of patients with Central Venous Access lines. Act as a resource for liver based research. Portfolio Management and Development Assist in the review of trial protocols and identify resource implications for the site. Set up and maintain the TMF/ISF with essential documents. Help organise initiation meetings. Liaise with and assist the medical team/sponsor organisation in - on-study treatment and follow up of patient Ensure CRFs are completed accurately and in a timely manner. Ensure SAEs are recorded and reported in accordance with the protocol and/or sponsors SOP. For network trials, ensure that accrual data is uploaded onto the NIHR CRN portal using the EDGE clinical trials database. Collect and provide information to allow for invoices to be raised for payments where appropriate Liaise with other departments and wards at the site/s, in order to promote a good working environment, integration of research within and open channels of communication. Inform appropriate medical personnel and departments of portfolio of clinical trials. Participate in the presentation of research findings within the Clinical Research Network South London and outside agencies as appropriate. Report adverse incidents and near misses via the Trusts online incident reporting form. Coordinate multi-centre trials (where appropriate). Together with the Kings Health Partners Clinical Trials Office (KHP CTO): Ensure all relevant documents and approvals are in place at each site prior to subject recruitment. Liaise with participating sites, identifying key staff and updating them on trial processes/changes to the protocol and ensuring centres are able to comply with the study protocol. Help conduct initiation meetings (if required) Collect data from sites, raise data queries and ensure data queries are resolved. Training and Development Attend the KHP CTO, NIHR CRN and CRN South London training programmes and other relevant education and training days/programmes as appropriate. Attend investigator/initiation meetings and conferences when required. Maintain awareness of current advances in hepatology treatments, research and nursing practice and use this knowledge to maintain high standards of care for Nurse trial patients. Disseminate research by assisting in the preparation of posters/research papers for meetings, conferences and publications. Also circulate trial information and carry our presentations locally.

About the Role:

An excellent opportunity is available for a Group Leader with expertise in cellular therapies to join the Cancer Research program at QIMR Berghofer. The position will be based at QIMR Berghofer, located at the Herston Health Precinct in Brisbane.  QIMR Berghofer has an outstanding record of high-impact research in cellular therapies, cancer genetics, cancer omics, bioinformatics, infectious diseases and immunology. We are seeking a new Laboratory Head who will build on and complement our existing strengths in cellular therapies. The new laboratory will compliment a broader cell therapies program, including pre-clinical and clinical research for the treatment of cancer and infectious diseases.

Our institute has a very strong track record on both autologous and allogenic therapies for treatment of cancer and infectious disease.
Through Q-Gen Cell Therapeutics, QIMR Berghofer has an on-site state-of-the-art GMP manufacturing facility for cell-therapies. This facility is dedicated to translating clinical research to the beside and supplies cell therapies for clinical trials based on campus (at the RBWH), interstate and overseas.

About You:

Further to the Position Description, you will have;

* A PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a relevant discipline and, typically, at least 5-10 years’ research experience.
* Appropriate clinical and specialist training.
* A track record of developing/engineering novel cell-based therapies for the treatment of cancer.
* Demonstrated experience in building and leading a research team.
* A track record in conducting innovative and impactful research, demonstrated leadership and experience in developing collaborations that will contribute to the QIMR Berghofer cancer program.
* A track record of securing research funding from diverse sources as lead investigator.
* An excellent publication record, as demonstrated by quantity, high quality, seniority of authorship and international recognition of peer-reviewed publications.
* A track record in research supervision and contribution to mentoring/research training.
* A strong national and international reputation, as demonstrated by collaborations, invitations to speak at national and international meetings, participation in external service, etc.
* A track record of responsible research conduct, with high standards of ethics and scientific rigour.

Desirable:

* A clinician researcher is preferred but we will also consider non-clinician research leaders with relevant experience.
* Experience in conducting clinical trials.
* Experience in contributing to research translation and impact, e.g. through commercialisation of IP and patent applications.
