About the role

The Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Research Fellow to play a key role in academic activities related to different projects including ARC funded and industry research, as well as general activities associated with the Biogenic dynamics group at UTS within the Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration (CAAV). You will be responsible for assisting group activities, support in teaching and research training into Mechatronics and Vibroacoustics (sensing, actuation) of students relating to vibration signals and data recorded from various sources (technical and natural) with strong to weak signal-to-noise ratios using single and multiple sensor arrangements.

The position will be based at the centrally located UTS Tech Lab in Botany and will report directly to Associate Professor, Dr Sebastian Oberst.

The Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration (CAAV) is a new research centre devoted to applied research in audio, acoustics and vibration. CAAV will host brand new state-of-the art experimental facilities, and aims to develop national and international partnerships with universities and industry.


About you

As a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Fellow, you will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. To be successful in this role you will take responsibility for initiating and delivering research in relation to the research project activities, using your strong research and analytical skills. Other requirements include:

• PhD in Physics, Mathematics or Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, or Theoretical Mechanics with an interest in signal processing, time series, and feature extraction
• Proven experience in programming field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) or microcontrollers
• Proven publication track record
• Experience working with industry and industry related projects


Base Salary Range: $84,431 to $102,832 pa (Level A) / $112,310 to $132,925 pa (Level B)

This position is full-time and appointment will be 3 year fixed term basis.

About the role

We have an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow - Microbiome. The main focus of this node is to investigate disease mechanisms, development and progression of COPD and the microbiome, comprising the community of microorganisms residing in the gut and respiratory tract, as a potential major influencer of COPD pathogenesis.. The role will have a major emphasis on investigating novel therapeutic and preventative treatments for this and possibly other chronic lung diseases. The individual must have experience in immunological, cellular and/or molecular techniques.

About you

You are a self-motivated individual, with extensive project management experience, achieving research outcomes and meeting deadlines. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow, you will have experience in the pathogenesis of the gut-lung axis in respiratory disease, including experience in immunological, microbiological, molecular and cellular techniques. You will also have experience in some of the below:
Doctoral Degree as it pertains to the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases.
Ability and willingness to work with mouse and human tissues, sample collection and analysis
Demonstrated skills in scientific writing and standard laboratory techniques and equipment
Knowledge of research methodology, policy and requirements of respiratory diseases and health-related research
Demonstrated ability to work within a team, with stakeholders and as part of a larger research grant.

Base Salary Range: $86,331 to $105,146 (Level A) / $114,836 to $135,915 pa (Level B)

The successful applicant may be appointed at level A or B dependent on their level of expertise and experience as outlined in the essential criteria on the Position Statement.

This role also attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

• Undertaking original research and seeking external funding in one of the three themes of the Medical Science Discipline – Infectious Diseases, Metabolic Disorders and Cancer, and Neuroscience and Neurological Disorders;
• Publishing research findings in peer reviewed journals;
• Supervising interns, Honours and Higher Degree Research students;
• Contributing effectively to service and engagement activities within the School, University and community.

About You

The successful candidate will play a key role in the teaching and development of academic subjects in Medical Science at UTS, actively contributing to the continued growth of this field.

To be successful, you will also ideally have the following attributes:

• PhD in a field relevant to Medical Science
• Comprehensive knowledge of, and demonstrated expertise in, Medical Science in order to teach Medical Science related subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students at different year levels.
