The Singapore Gastric Cancer Consortium (SGCC) is a translational research group comprising clinicians and scientists working in gastric cancer research. The National University of Singapore invites applications for research assistant/associates in the Multimodal Neuroimaging in Neuropsychiatric Disorders Laboratory (MNNDL), Centre for Sleep and Cognition, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The MNNDL group at NUS studies the human neural bases of cognitive functions and the associated vulnerability patterns in aging and neuropsychiatric disorders using multimodal neuroimaging and psychophysical techniques. We are interested in the large-scale brain structural and functional networks in healthy developing and aging brain and symptoms-related changes in diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders and psychosis. Statistical, computational, and machine learning methods are developed to analyze and fuse multimodal neuroimaging data. By integrating longitudinal behavior, neuroimaging, and genotype data, our long-term goal is to investigate the interactions among brain network dynamics, behavior, diseases, and genotypes to develop non-invasive biomarkers for early detection, differential diagnosis, progression monitoring, and treatment design.

Key attractions are access to a high-performance computing cluster, two 3T Prisma MR scanner and a MR compatible digital EEG system as well as collaboration opportunities with an excellent network of domestic and international scientists and doctors. Purpose of the post

The Research Assistant (RA) will work closely with the Principal Investigator, lab members, and collaborators to ensure successful completion of research projects (including neuroimaging, behavioral, and digital tracking experiments), smooth operation of computing and neuroimaging equipment, and efficient management of neuroimaging database in the lab.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The research assistant will support the effort in conducting cutting-edge neuroscience and machine learning research and development. He/she has the opportunity to learn state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques, data collection and analysis, with healthy participants and patients with neuropsychiatric diseases. He/she will be primarily engaged in all neuroimaging and behavioral experiments such as subject recruitment, behavioral testing, digital tracking, image data collection, and data analysis. He/she will also support computing server/storage administration (with support from external vendors), neuroimaging equipment maintenance, and general lab administration like website. He/she will also be able to learn how to conduct fMRI scans with EEG recording, interactions with patients, quality control, behavioural assessments, neuroimage processing using automatic or semi-automatic scripts, and implications in neuroscience and disease. The research assistant is expected to learn neuroimaging softwares and assist researchers in IRB application, data preprocessing and database management in various research projects. We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the laboratory of Dr Arpan Mehta. This is a fixed-term appointment for 18 months, with potential extension at the end of the term.

We are recruiting for a driven individual to join the laboratory of Dr Arpan Mehta, a clinician-scientist, with expertise in cell biology and/or gene-editing to conduct an innovative pooled CRISPR screen in human motor neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells. The overarching goal of the lab is to undertake fundamental research to understand the molecular basis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a form of motor neuron disease (MND), through open and interdisciplinary collaborations within and outwith of our unit.

The successful applicant will undertake a project as part of the MND Accelerator (MNDAcc) initiative funded by the Medical Research Council and National Institute for Health and Care Research to make the translation of discoveries into therapeutics easier for motor neuron disease and frontotemporal dementia. The goal is to make robust discoveries and share data openly in the space of 18 months.

Your priorities will include:

• Build C9ORF72-iCas9 iPS cell line and perform quality control followed by differentiation to motor neurons and microglia using published protocols.
• Optimise and perform a kinome-wide CRSIPR/Cas9 knock out-screen and sgRNA enrichment analysis.
• Validate the top candidate hits and create a CROP-seq library in partnership with UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) single-cell facility.

• Design and develop the MRI chassis and mechanical housing for electronic components, ensuring that all designs meet specifications for strength, weight, thermal stability, and compliance. Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability and assembly, using knowledge of advanced manufacturing techniques.

This project will involve recruitment, assessment, and analysis of the research data. The candidate will also be working on models in policy evaluation. This is a full-time position based in Singapore.

Duties may include but are not limited to: (1) provide programming support to a research project (2) assist with recruitment and data analyses; (3) manage large complex databases; (4) conduct literature reviews (5) contribute to the development of scientific papers and the dissemination of the study findings.

The appointed candidate should: (1) Hold at least a bachelor degree (2) be proficient in Stata or R and (3) have experience in statistics, mathematics, econometrics, computer science, quantitative social science, public health, epidemiology or related field. Experience with C++ is preferred but not required.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to query large data sets and have excellent knowledge of quantitative methods in applied health and/or social sciences. Fluency in English, as well as demonstrably good writing and analytic skills are essential. Fluency in English is required as the candidate will deal with English-speaking stakeholders, such as conducting the research and meetings. The role will suit someone who enjoys problem-solving.

The position is for one year but can potentially be extended. The grade of appointment will be accorded based on candidate’s academic qualifications and years of relevant experience.

The Services required are set out as follows: Lab Support Services

Set up materials and equipment for day to day experiments and for practical exams.

Ensure all practicals that take place in the labs run smoothly. Assist teachers to trouble-shoot where possible. Check on practicals once in a while when lessons are ongoing.

Conduct safety review of labs under her charge once every 6 months and suggest recommendations to HOD to improve lab safety.

Lab Maintenance

Monitoring schedule of teachers coming in and out of the science rooms.

Assist in procurement of science equipment & instrument.

Maintain science equipment and apparatus in the lab.

Maintain inventory record of science lab equipment.

Assist science teachers in lesson preparation (when necessary).

Assist in the maintenance of the science lab, eco pond, sky garden and terrarium.

Assist in the maintenance of living organisms in the lab (e.g. stick insects, hamsters, fish etc)

Support Science Department, to share experiences with HOD and teachers in the planning practical schedule and experiments requirement to enhance students’ experience.

Ensure the labs are ready for guest visits and meetings.
