An exciting career opportunity for a new climbing Arboriculturist to work within a small, friendly and crucial essential service as part of the wider Grounds Maintenance department.

The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of looking after the Council trees and green spaces across both South Hams District and West Devon Borough Council.

You will be fully qualified and hold relevant climbing qualifications, with a clean driver’s licence and with some industry experience. You will have a good understanding of current best practice especially British Standard BS 3998-2010- Tree Works, recommendations and the ability to consider the right pruning techniques for individual trees.

The applicant must be hardworking, able to work on their own initiative and within a team. You will have knowledge of all areas of current legislation and best practice in the industry, excellent understanding of climbing equipment, the ability to operate handsaw/chainsaws and mechanical devices, work in all weather conditions, work as a member of the grounds maintenance team when needed, be physically fit to lift heavy objects and have good communications skills.

This role will require a reasonable standard of physical fitness and involves working outdoors in all weathers, at height and in difficult terrain at times

Good communication skills are essential for this role alongside a self-disciplined outlook. The ability to lead by example, strive for best practice, be open, honest and trustworthy are fundamental.

Full PPE and training will be provided as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving a competent workforce. You may be required to work anywhere within South Hams and West Devon but will operate out of our South Hams depots.

South Hams District Council's Community Services (Property) Team has an exciting opportunity for an experienced line-manager based at our Totnes Depot. As part of the wider Community Services Team, we believe passionately about delivering quality council services with pride and efficiency. Therefore, our ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience in managing and leading an operational team in delivering a high-quality service in a customer facing environment.

The successful applicant will be required to take ownership of the operatives who undertake the repair and maintenance of the Councils assets, as well as engaging with members of the public, political members, community groups and other operational teams on a daily basis.

You will need to display excellent communication skills for this post and will be expected to provide support, training and guidance to the operatives in your team. Leading by example and displaying best practice, you will ensure the safety of a group of predominantly lone workers and their associated fleet vehicles, whilst they carry out a varied range of repair and scheduled planned property maintenance tasks.

Taking the lead in the employment of the departments health and safety policy and safe systems of work, we will ask that you assist with the balanced distribution of work and manage the effective deployment of our operatives as they go about the property maintenance we undertake. To fulfil this part of the role you will need to provide back-office administration, as well as stock control and have some knowledge of the work we do.

Either working alone under your own initiative or as an important part of a larger team on project work, we will ask that applicants have a flexible approach to their workday to meet the demands of the reactive and planned duties we undertake.

We are looking for 3 apprentices as part of the countryside Life on the Edge (LotE) project. LotE Level 2 apprentices will be working to helping create, restore and conserve important habitats on the South Devon coast, all working towards securing a future for 30 rare and threatened invertebrates which call South Devon home. Species include Mediterranean oil beetle, Long-horned bee and the rarest bee in Britain, the Six-banded nomad bee. They will work towards a Level 2 Countryside Worker qualification, with our partner training provider.

Through a programme of structured learning, both at college and on the job with South Devon Ranger teams, Life on the Edge Apprentices will gain experience and build a portfolio and given the opportunity to gain a Level 2 Apprenticeship.

Working alongside project partners, the National Trust, apprentices will be hosted by local ranger teams at two locations; Southdown farm and Coleton Fishacre who look to conserve and enhance the spaces for people and for nature. Working at National Trust sites, ranging over 90km along the entirety of the South Devon Coast, these LotE apprenticeship opportunities will have a fantastic insight into the world of nature conservation, whilst improving access and inspiring others about nature.

We urge applicants to apply who meet the scheme requirements and have a keenness to learn more about the natural world and how to conserve it. The work will be varied - alongside the ranger teams it will range from practical estate work, surveying plants and insects, and engaging with the public at events. The scheme will also benefit from the wider Life on the Edge project with opportunities to be involved with wider project activity with other project delivery partners.

All interested candidates are encouraged to join an online webinar session to learn more about the Life on the Edge project, this apprenticeship scheme and ask any questions in a short Q&A session. As an apprentice in this role, there may be times when you are solely responsible for company property, such as tools and work vehicles. You will need therefore, to demonstrate that you can work an operate within the limits of your own competence and know when, or form whom, to seek help and support when needed.
