Major Duties: These positions lead a trail crew in the construction, repair, and maintenance of drainage structures, brushing and clearing of trail corridors, safe felling of tress and hazard tress, dry masonry, carpentry, and rigging. Lead trail crews in building and repairing log and dimensional wood structures including multiple stringer bridges, retaining walls, handrails, steps, and causeways. Plan, lay-out, and select proper tools and materials and schedule the operational needs of a crew. These positions require heavy physical labor, carrying heavy objects, rolling rocks and logs by hand and with tools. These positions require working in the backcountry, carrying a backpack, power or hand tools and frequently require hikes up to 20 miles per day. Projects are in mountainous terrain and require work at high elevations.

Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 lbs., must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel and other hand tools extensively. Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools.

Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in mountainous terrain at elevations between 8,000 and 13,000 feet in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around livestock or explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around rigging equipment and machinery.

This position works under a Trails Maintenance Leader or other higher-graded employees. The incumbent primarily assists in maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails. Assists in the installation, repair and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbing, and retainer walls. Removes windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings, and debris from trails. Builds up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Installs stepping-stones or bridges at creek crossings. Safely and effectively uses hand and power tools required for the job and has the ability to maintain these tools properly. May perform work on roads, trail signs, parking lots, boundary fences, corral repair, and construction.

Physical Effort: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds, carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency-medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas forextended periods of time.

Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including in mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rockslide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.

Major Duties of the position: Perform heavy physical labor such as clearing brush and fallen logs from trail corridors, digging for long periods of time with a shovel and pick, carrying logs and rolling rocks. Construct and maintain trail drainage structures and backcountry bridges. Use and maintain a variety of tools and equipment commonly used in Laborer (Trails) duties. Use standard safety equipment and follow safety procedures. Work may involve living and working out of remote backcountry camps for extended periods of time.

Physical Effort: The work performed requires very heavy physical effort. The incumbent routinely lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries items weighing 50 pounds, and up to 150 pounds (or more) with assistance. Work will routinely require walking several miles per day over park trails to and from job sites.

Working Conditions: Almost all of the incumbent's work will be outside in all kinds of weather conditions. Work frequently involves the possibility of experiencing exposure to poisonous plants, bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes, sunburn, and insect bites. As a result, the employee must follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as hard hats, gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards and serious injuries. Much of the time the incumbent will be living in remote back country camps for extended periods of time, cooking over an open fire and sleeping in a tent. The incumbent must be able to live cooperatively in camp with other crew members, practice minimum impact camping and proper food storage for food preservation and protection from wildlife (e.g., bears, etc.), and maintain good personal and camp hygiene.

• Operates gas or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler-type traction, such as road graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, wheel loaders, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.
• Operates equipment to push, pull, pile, excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth and/or refuse.

Major Duties:

The incumbent may work independently or with the other crew members to maintain, repair. and preserve structures. This work may include:

• Removal of damaged portions of walls, selecting and dressing replacement stones, repointing mortar, and replicating original architectural styles.
• Prepare mortar with appropriate percentage of sand, soil, and chemical additives and apply preservative chemicals to stone and wood.
• Perform other types of activities involving the preservation of historic architecture, as necessary.

Employee serves as a Maintenance Mechanic assigned to the Facilities Management Branch. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:

• Installs, repairs, modifies, and maintains buildings and associated systems and equipment.
• Lays out work, determines requirements, draws materials and carries assignment to completion utilizing established trade techniques and adhering to safety requirements and national building codes

In these positions, you perform moderately heavy physical labor requiring the use of common hand tools and power equipment involving any or all of the following duties:

• Operate heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, portable snow blowers and all types of hand tools (such as shovels, rakes, lawn edging equipment, etc.) to maintain buildings, grounds, trails, etc.
• Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc.
• Move furniture, remove and set signs, paint picnic tables and signs, rake and water lawns, trim trees and shrubbery, pick up litter and/or clean fire pits.

The Supervisory Dispatcher's primary objectives are to supervise subordinate employees while ensuring seamless operations in the communication center. The Supervisory Dispatcher balances the needs of the center with the needs and well-being of dispatch staff. The Supervisory Dispatcher projects and models our mission of ensuring the safety of staff and visitors of the National Park Service in Alaska by providing a professional point-of-contact for communications and emergency services. This position perform the full range of custodial work including: cleaning and servicing vault toilets, buildings, campgrounds, and emptying trash receptacles. These positions are required to operate a government vehicle to perform assigned work and may provide general labor assistance to others in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc. These are uniformed positions and must be able to respond to visitors politely.

There are three districts hiring at Yellowstone National Park.

North District:. Elevation at Mammoth is 6,200 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. A school is available, with kindergarten through 12, in Gardiner, Montana, five miles north of headquarters. Free bus transportation is provided for school children between Mammoth and Gardiner. Many community facilities such as stores, a drugstore, day care, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth. All other services are available within 55 to 75 miles from Mammoth.

Lake District: The approximate elevation is 7,700 feet with an average temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer to sub-zero in winter. During the winter months, the snow accumulation on the ground averages 30-inches. During the time period of November - April, the interior park roads are closed to wheeled vehicle traffic and only accessible via snow machine. The closest neighboring communities for year around amenities are Cody Wyoming (64 miles - 2.5 hours via snow machine) and Jackson Wyoming (98 miles - 4 hours via snow machine) During the summer months Lake community facilities include a store, medical clinic, motels, and a restaurant. All other services are available at Cody or Jackson Wyoming. Housing is available for this position.

West District: including West Yellowstone MT, Madison Junction WY, and Old Faithful, WY. The nearest developed town is in West Yellowstone, along with a medical clinic, year-round post office, grocery stores, and a K-12 school. Elevation is approximately 7,000-7,700 feet above sea level, and temperatures can range from -30 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, to 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Old Faithful has lodging available in the summer and winter seasons, a summertime medical clinic and post office, as well as general stores. Winter accessibility is limited to snowmobile use and roads are groomed nightly.

Provides results to higher-level specialists for analysis. Provides logistical support and area orientation for contract or cooperating scientists. Monitors plots and makes field observation of resource conditions. May prepare fire behavior monitoring documentation on forms for prescribed burns. Identifies grasses, herbs, shrubs and trees to species (by knowledge or using a dichotomous key). Catalogs, labels and stores plant materials collected during the season. Prepares field maps and photographs from the ground (read topographic maps and locate predetermined points with GPS). Enters natural resource field data into a personal computer (or handheld electronic devices using customized software). May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.

A Wildland Firefighter (GS-06) serves as an experienced wildland firefighter on a Helitack crew performing the following duties: locates fire line, directs and participates in fire line construction, backfiring and burnout operations, tree felling and holding/patrol mop-up operations. Directs the fire suppression efforts of the helicopter module. Directs the loading of helicopter personnel and cargo, considers weight and balance, securing cargo. Completes manifests of personnel and equipment being transported to the fire or other work sites. Inventories and inspects helicopter accessories, fire tools, and equipment. Ensures that needed tools and equipment are available for firefighting tasks.
