Our Global IP Search and Intelligence team supports our Global Intellectual Property Group’s business objectives of protecting our Human Health and Animal Health organization’s Intellectual Property interests by providing high quality, comprehensive, value-added search reports. By applying their broad knowledge of (patent) information databases and analysis tools, profound scientific knowledge, and (bio)pharmaceutical industry experience the team can handle assignments effectively and efficiently which allows our Patent Attorneys to focus on legal matters. Due to the approaching retirement of one of our valued colleagues, we are seeking a new Senior Patent Information Specialist.
Purpose of the role
You will primarily be responsible for conducting searches and analyses of patents and scientific literature, as well as configuring hosted databases related to biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Your role will involve conducting timely, accurate, and comprehensive searches and analyses to support research & development activities, intellectual property protection, and business development & licensing initiatives. This role requires close collaboration with IP staff in The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the US.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting complex biotechnology/pharmaceutical patent and literature searches, i.e., freedom-to-operate, patentability, patent (in)validity/opposition and technology landscape searches in support of the IP Group’s US and international IP operations including providing clients focused, yet timely comprehensive, value-add search reports.
- Working directly with requesters to define the information needs, develop appropriate search strategy, perform the requested search & analysis using appropriate sources, and deliver the results to the requester in a consumable format and in a timely manner.
- Working proactively with global patent attorneys to understand strategic priorities and clients' needs and perform assigned searches.
- Preparing and delivering value-added patent analysis reports on a broad range of subject areas in (bio)pharmaceutical and biotechnology to support our organization’s research and development activities.
- Patent expiry and loss of exclusivity (LOE) analyses.
- Detailed patent legal status analysis (US and international).
- Advising manager with respect to new developments in the (patent) information industry from a user perspective. Evaluation of new information tools and databases, especially AI tools supporting patent information search & analysis.
- Generating reports from databases using computer programming languages and program this to meet stakeholders’ wishes.
- Configure output from vendor-hosted systems for specific in-company requirements.
- Working with IT staff to resolve problems connecting to subscribed resources and in-company hosted systems.

Your profile
- MSc. or PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or life sciences.
- At least 5 years’ experience in conducting complex biotechnology/pharmaceutical patent and literature searches, i.e. freedom-to-operate, patentability and validity searches, patent expiry (LOE) & detailed patent legal status (U.S. and International) gaining expertise in developing comprehensive synonym lists and complex strategies under short deadlines in support of patent search requests.
- Broad knowledge of (patent) information databases and analysis tools, profound scientific knowledge (molecular biology, biochemistry, life sciences) and biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry experience.
- Customer friendly; ability to understand and address the specific needs and requirements of clients when providing search reports.
- Strong organization and time management skills with ability to handle short deadlines and simultaneous complex search requests. Ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Excellent command of the English language.
