Department of Histopathology University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire

Higher Level BMA (Band 4) Histology

Following the recent improvements to process in Histology we have changed our process of allocating work to our Consultants.

We are looking for an experienced Biomedical Assistant who would like an additional challenge to be involved in the digital pathology, microtomy and allocation of work to consultants. This position will be one of a team of Band 4 Biomedical assistants working with Biomedical Scientists and other Biomedical Assistants to produce digital images of slides produced in the laboratory, to produce glass slides and help our consultant team manage their workload .

You will be expected to take part in other Histology laboratory duties such as microtomy, embedding and in helping the Biomedical Scientists at complementary tests such as Immunohistochemistry (see attached Job Description)

The laboratory has moved towards an extended working day with shifts in histology on Warwick and Coventry sites between the hours of 7am and 7pm and will include Saturday mornings and Bank Holidays in the future. However, as the service develops this may change and the successful candidate will be employed on a 24/7 contract. Due to the demands of the service, a flexible approach to working hours is expected, although this will be restricted to 37.5 hours per week.

1.Perform accurate embedding of varied tissue samples from small biopsies (excluding core sample biopsies), resection and post mortem specimens in paraffin wax. Using own judgement to make decisions relating to quality control, rectifying any faults where necessary. There is a requirement for the ability to recognise different tissue types to ensure appropriate orientation of samples for subsequent sectioning

2.Perform microtomy of varied tissue samples (excluding core sample biopsies) to a high quality standard producing thin sections from specimen blocks. Use own judgement to make decisions relating to quality control, rectifying any faults where necessary, adhering to the correct specimen protocols whilst preventing the loss of diagnostic material assuring the quality of the service. The ability to recognise when samples need input from a senior member of staff is a requirement.

3.Undertake the accurate filing/retrieval of slides and blocks and scanning of request cards. Responsible for packaging patient materials i.e. reports, slides, blocks and specimens to be sent to other trusts for tests, reviews, MDT’s or other requests.

Also included will be the allocation of work to pathologists using a bespoke spreadsheet produced by our department.

We are an integrated Children and Young People (CYP) Community Nursing Service providing specialist nursing care to CYP with complex physical health needs. This includes Community Children’s Nursing , special school nursing and respite provision. Significant investment in our Special School Nursing team means we are looking for several new posts to support the growing number of CYP with complex health needs in Coventry’s special schools. This post is for an experienced children’s nurse/ learning disability nurse with extensive children’s experience. The post will act as a senior nurse the five special schools the service supports facilitating the team of nurses and carers to meet the complex physical health needs of pupils in school.

Extensive experience of working with children or young people with complex physical health needs is essential ideally in a variety of settings but especially special schools. The post requires you to hold a children’s qualification either RN Child or RGN with an RSCN qualification. Candidates who are registered LD or adult nurses and can demonstrate extensive experience working with children with complex health needs will be considered.

The post is to lead a group of nurses and carers to ensure the complex health needs of the pupils are supported whilst attending school. This will include being a point of contact for education staff as well as the multi-professional team. This will include the assessment of health needs, care planning, delegation of nursing care to non- registered professionals following competency based training.

The post holder will be responsible for leading a team of nurses and carers in a special school to deliver a wide range of clinical care to pupils during the school day. Team working and especially experience in multi-agency working is essential as the post will also involve working with education and social care to provide holistic care to CYP on the caseload. The post holder will support the team leader in the overall management of the service across five special schools and act in their absence when required. A good working knowledge of EHCPs and the SEND agenda is also required along with experience in safeguarding. The successful candidate will have good communication skills, be a team player whilst being able to work autonomously when required. A sense of fun and creativity are also valuable traits. CWPS is one of the largest training centres for the West Midlands Cellular Pathology Training Scheme and is also part of the West Midlands ST1 Training School. The UHCW Centre of Excellence for Digital Pathology has been established, in partnership with the University of Warwick Computer Science Department, and is aimed at developing and evaluating digital pathology algorithms of diagnostic and prognostic use.
