The Opportunity:
As the Communications Engineer, you will be accountable to the CA31 Battlefield Communications System (BCS) Tactical Communications Network (TCN) Sustainment Manager within the LC4S Branch Sustainment SPO for engineering activities relating to sustaining CA31’s TCN fleet of products along with other TCN engineers and technicians, and may occasionally be engaged to support the other CA31 BTN capabilities.
Your role will include: engaging with stakeholders, investigate radio frequency communications engineering concepts, deliver and manage specifications and resources in support of the Defence materiel capability lifecycle. Investigate, analyse and report on radio frequency communications engineering defects, requirements, develop and implement recommendations and advice to address issues.
You will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. You will have a considerable level of stakeholder engagement and will liaise with stakeholders in relation to complex or difficult issues. You will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes.
Responsibilities:
- Perform critical and complex engineering activities and provide advice in the field of communication engineering under broad direction.
- Accountable for exercising assigned engineering authorities and any Technical Regulatory Authority delegations.
- Apply engineering knowledge and experience to identify risks and uncertainties and take these into account in planning, decision making and priority setting.
- Demonstrate communication engineering knowledge and provide advice and recommendations on the development of advancements to established engineering principles, techniques, methods and regulations.
- Build and sustain positive relationships with team members, actively participate in teamwork and motivate and mentor developing engineers.
- Tailor communication style and language to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Assess technical and design packages including scoping, planning, reviewing, provide recommendations and contribute to the implementation of actions.
- Evaluate that the delivered materiel meets the endorsed requirements and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks, provide recommendations and contribute to the implementation of actions.
- Monitor and ensure safety aspects of Defence materiel systems are considered and incorporated into communication engineering activities.
- Manage workflows, resources, prepare work area and team plans detailing measurable milestones and expected outcomes.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Appropriate Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field/specialty (RF/Communications)
- Registered Chartered Professional Engineer
- 8-10 + years of relevant, advanced and complex engineering experience
- Experience in Defence Industry.

Important Information
This position will require the Communications Engineer to access US export controlled materiel and therefore applicants will be requested to disclose any dual citizenship with another country during the recruitment process. Dual citizens may be subject to further assessment, and appointment to this position will be conditional upon approval to access US controlled export materiel in accordance with the United States Arms Export Control Act.
This position will require the Communications Engineer to be assessed to be Technically Proficient (TP) at level of Three (3) or Four (4) by the LC4SB Sustainment SPO Principal Engineer (PENG) when applying for their Technical Authority (TA) associated with this position. Refer to the following details regarding the requirements for each of these levels:
TP Level Three (3): Registered Chartered Professional Engineer on National Engineering Register (NER) with many years of relevant engineering experience in the areas specifically required for the role to be filled. The areas specifically require proven experience and knowledge in advance and complex engineering for the role.
TP Level Four (4): Communications Engineer with an accredited or recognised four-year engineering degree and has completed a minimum of three years engineering work experience after completing the degree, e.g. RF Communications.
You must not have worked full-time for Defence as either an ADF (SERCAT 6 or 7) member, or APS employee in the 12 months prior to commencing with CA31 as an “Above-the-Line” contractor.
