What you will do

Under general supervision, conducts preventive maintenance, repair, installation, general servicing and troubleshooting of mechanical HVAC systems. Responsible for high levels of customer satisfaction through direct, on site, customer interface. Mentors peers on mechanical HVAC installation & service activities. Properly completes required project and service documentation.

How you will do it

Apprentices are governed by the local union agreement and they will perform all pneumatic control systems and mechanical equipment service and all other work coming under this Agreement assigned by the Employer, limited only by their capabilities as determined by the Employer, at the respective apprentice rate of pay, and shall perform all assigned work under the direction of the Employer.

Routine service and inspections, regardless of size or location of the HVAC mechanical equipment being inspected or serviced, where this work is done as a periodic and routine procedure by the Employer, such as:

• Change and service filters
• Oiling and greasing
• Adjust or replace belts
• Clean cooling towers, coils, evaporator and condenser tubes and general housekeeping
• Mechanical systems operation under contract with customer
• Cleaning and routine maintenance of solar energy equipment
• Indoor Air Quality related work including duct systems and drain pans

What we look for
Required

• Must be an existing local union 486 apprentice.

• Vocational School four-year program or an Associate degree in mechanical systems, air conditioning or similar field
• Three years of industry experience or five years of experience in servicing mechanical systems in the HVAC industry
• Generally required knowledge includes mechanical HVAC systems, facilities management systems, site preparation, peripheral equipment installation and servicing techniques
• Effective interpersonal skills to properly represent Johnson Controls to customers and other outside contacts in an ethical and professional manner
• Ability to explain technical information to technical and non-technical people
• Leadership skills to support the activities of Mechanics working on non-complex, non-critical mechanical HVAC equipment on a job site

This is a Bargaining Unit Position but is subject to all pre-hiring screening of JCI. With successful performance, JCI may recommend you to the Union Local apprenticeship program, as well as continued employment at JCI.  Acceptance by Union Local must occur within 365 days of employment or will result in termination of this position.  This is not a guaranty of employment or entering the Union. What you will do:

Under general direction, perform preventive maintenance, repair, installation and/or replacement of HVAC Controls Systems & Equipment, Building Control Systems, and occasionally Fire/Security Systems. 

Mostly, work will involve Johnson Controls Metasys brand of building automation systems and controls products. 

How you will do it:

• Experience with programming and/or troubleshooting in one or more of the following brands of HVAC Controls products is highly desired:  Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Siemens, Delta, Distech, Carrier, ALC, and/or Andover.  Experience with BAS communication protocols should include one of the following:  BACnet MSTP, BACnet IP, N2, P1, Modbus, and/or LON. 
• Additionally, Technical Team Lead shall assist branch leadership with coaching and mentoring of branch technicians with the delivery of customer satisfaction and providing technical support and assistance with technical development for others in the HVAC Controls team.
• Ensures work is being performed in compliance with company, state, local and Federal legal requirements and operates on the job with the highest level of ethics. 
• Properly completes all required company, customer, and service documentation.

What we look for:

Required
 

• High School Diploma or GED (Bachelor’s Degree, preferred)
• At least 3 years of related experience
• Adheres to all Johnson Controls and customer safety standards. Provides safety leadership and instruction to all Technicians. Provides safety awareness and instruction to subcontractors on Johnson Controls work sites.
• Recognized as a Leader by peers while being a coach and mentor within the branch. Escalation point on technical issues and provides on-the-job training for other technicians.
• Provides solutions to others on very complex system problems by either troubleshooting or advising how to resolve problems.
• Escalation point from the branch to the technical resource team in Milwaukee for critical issues. Viewed as an expert in given field by both employees and customers.
• Assists management with assuring proper field operational disciplines of other Technicians are followed.
• Regularly provides input on development and training needs of the branch.
• Assists in developing quotes and estimates for identified L&M work and submits to the Customer, Service Manager or Customer Service Agent, as appropriate.
• Assists with the identification of material needs required for service delivery.
• Assists the Service Manager or Customer Service Agent with identifying and scheduling individuals with the correct skills and knowledge to perform repairs or installation.
• Communicates with customer upon arrival and before leaving the work site. Ensures high levels of customer satisfaction. Meets regularly with customer to become familiar with operating problems. Keeps customer informed on the nature of service provided outstanding issues and recommends system enhancements, upgrades, and or repairs.
• Manages assigned work to meet a professional level of execution, on-time and to the customer satisfaction.
• Provides consultant level services for customers related to building system repairs and enhancements.
• Ensures ultimate customer satisfaction levels with assigned customers.
• Conducts self-study (reading, research and practice) to improve and maintain technical proficiency.
• Completes all training and certifications as required by the company.

What you will do:

Performs assigned system commissioning using Johnson Controls configuration and commissioning tools. Troubleshoots and resolves basic HVAC mechanical, electrical, and controls problems.  Responds to basic warranty calls.

How you will do it:

• Loads system-level controller software
• Performs more complex commissioning and system diagnostics from system-level controllers to end devices (i.e. sensors, actuators, etc) and completes all required commissioning documentation
• Keeps management and JCI contractor or customer informed of job progress and issues
• Calibrates systems requiring basic electronic test equipment 
• Completes administrative tasks including but not limited to time sheets, expense reports, and on-site documentation 
• Documents changes and provides information for as-built documentation
• Communicates with the JCI contractor or customer upon arrival and before leaving the work site
• Follows all safety standards and attends required safety training.  High degree of regard to employee and subcontractor safety

What we look for:

Required

• 2-year degree in electronics, mechanical systems, computer technology, air conditioning or similar field or at least 3-5 years of industry experience or experience in servicing electronic and/or mechanical systems in the HVAC industry----

What you will do:

Responsible for high levels of customer satisfaction through direct, on site, customer interface. Mentor mechanical technicians on building automation activities. Properly completes required project and service documentation.

How you will do it:

• Diagnoses and repairs complex electronic control system malfunction's requiring extensive knowledge of a variety of electronic or digital controls systems and ability to test and write modifications in multiple languages of systems software.
• Provides sketches of field changes and discrepancies for engineering corrections and drawings.
• Communicates with customer upon arrival and before leaving the work site. Ensures high levels of customer satisfaction. Meets regularly with customer to become familiar with operating problems. Keeps customer informed on the nature of service provided outstanding issues and recommends system enhancements, upgrades, and or repairs. Promotes the sale of add-on work.
• Manages assigned work to meet professional execution, of time and customer satisfaction. Reports problems or changes to management immediately. Interfaces with branch manager, service manager, service project manager or subcontractors on projects to coordinate activities as required in an ethical and professional manner.
• Adheres to all Johnson Controls and customer safety standards. Provides safety awareness on work sites.
• May provide training to customers on electronic control systems operations. Delivers manuals and documentation to the customer for training needs as required.
• Mentors and trains mechanical workforce on building automation systems. Provides support to the mechanical staff on non-complex, non-critical equipment.
• Compiles job documentation, such as certificate of completion, customer training forms, training certificates and punch lists.
• Conducts extensive self-study (reading, research and practice) to improve and maintain technical proficiency in company's product lines. Completes certifications as required by the company.

Our Early Career Sales Engineering (BEST) Program is a 4-month technical sales development program for Recent College Graduates that focuses on creating market share by strategic selling Johnson Controls’ HVAC products and services to commercial customers. In this program you will have a chance to apply your technical engineering knowledge and business acumen to work with customers to better understand their product and project needs by being the subject matter expert. As part of the program, you will participate in a 4-month training and development program combining classroom, field orientation, and on the job training. You will learn our mechanical equipment and service offerings, customer relationship techniques and leadership skills in preparation for supporting customers in your territory alongside the sales team.
