What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking a well-qualified and enthusiastic science graduate to grow and enhance our large and successful science team as a result of recent increases in the uptake of science courses post-16, Psychology at KS4 and pupil intake in KS3.

The science department is a highly successful one, making a significant contribution to EBacc progress scores that are consistently significantly above the national average. In 2023, (latest validated data), KS4 science value added was significantly above national and in the top 28% of all schools. Attainment across all courses in KS5 is also strong, with Biology A level in the top 20% of all schools.

We would expect the successful candidate to teach all Science disciplines at Key Stage 3 and in Key Stage 4 Combined Science and demonstrate their potential to teach their specialist subject in Triple Science. We offer the full range of science courses in the sixth form and therefore applicants with the desire to teach A level or BTEC level 3 Applied Science can be well supported by the school. We also offer GCSE and A level Psychology within the Science department.

We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Psychology for a highly motivated Research Assistant researcher to join the Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems. The Co-Centre is an exciting 6-year, 35M Euro Research Investment funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.

The Co-Centre brings together an academic team from 17 research institutions across all 3 jurisdictions. The vision of the Co-Centre is to develop innovative and transformative solutions to transition our food systems to become more resilient and sustainable through a multi and interdisciplinary programme of basic and applied research. The Co-Centre research is structured as Platforms, demonstrator projects and spokes which include targeted projects which are funded wholly or in part by industry. A platform dedicated to Nutrition and Health will provide evidence-based data to encourage the development, acceptance, and uptake of healthy diets from sustainable sources (HDSS) across all population groups.

This role will support Professor Louise Dye to conduct a programme of research within this platform which seeks to understand and ensure equitable access to breakfast provision and intake in children and adolescents across the Island of Ireland. This research will support the transition to HDSS and address micronutrient deficiencies.

Key role objectives

Sitting within the Financial Inclusion Team the post holder will provide administrative support to both the Projects and Interventions Officer, and the wider Financial Inclusion Team. We are seeking an exceptional Science teacher with the energy, passion and creativity to teach Science in the Secondary phase of our thriving All-Through school. This is an opportunity for a full time position from January 2025. A later start will be considered for the right candidate.

The Team

Our highly qualified and successful Science department consists of a five strong collaborative and highly capable teaching team, supported by two experienced and exceptionally creative Technicians. The Science Department is housed in six state of the art, bright, high-ceilinged labs and two specialist preparation rooms, with impressive views of the local area. Our results have been increasing year on year, with GCSE results in line with national average progress 8 scores. As a department we are committed to improving outcomes and sparking interest, with small class sizes in all GCSE year groups. The required science practicals are only a small part of the number of practical lessons that occur throughout the year, and all Science lessons - from Year 7 upwards - are timetabled in specialist laboratories to support our approach.

Pupils are entered for AQA Science Trilogy GCSE with a significant number of students opting for Triple Science, which is one of the most popular GCSE choices at CFS.

The Role

The successful candidate will be expected to teach Science from Years 7 to 11. Due to the current expertise in the team – all three Sciences are ably represented – a specialist in Biology, Chemistry or Physics would be welcomed. Most secondary teachers at CFS are also tutors for a year-based tutor group; a time allowance is provided when undertaking this role.
