We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Associate to join Cardiff’s team to help deliver the HyNTS project.

This position is funded through a Strategic Innovation Funding collaboration on the HyNTS project. The aim of the project is to investigate the compression of hydrogen for use in energy networks. It will test repurposing of existing compression equipment to determine if it could be used for 100% hydrogen transmission. 

Project partners include Cardiff University, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Northern Gas Networks, Southern Gas Networks, DNV Services UK, Premtech and Cullum Detuners. Under the beta phase, the project has been awarded £33.3 million ($42.8 million).

Periodic trips to the FutureGrid research facility are expected, and the candidate would need to engage in and review industrially led research activities.

The candidate would be expected to attend periodic events that take place around the UK, with meeting occurring nominally every month.

In this role, you will:
• Engage in and review industrially led research activities, including attendance at periodic events.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), is fixed term for 27 months and is available immediately.

The selected candidate will have responsibility for writing SOPs, protocols, reports, and computer system validation (CSV) documents (e.g. URS, RTM, VSR, IQOQPQ) to support GMP systems.  The candidate will also support the new LabVantage LIMS with eLN for metadata entry and day-to-day site upkeep of the system. The Senior/Principal Process Development Engineer will be responsible for supporting process development and leading process optimization, scale-up and validation for modified-release, ophthalmic products from early pre-clinical development through clinical development, and commercial release. This position will be responsible for GMP facility maintenance, operations, systems qualification, and for supporting quality management systems. The Senior/Principal Process Development Engineer will also assist in the oversight of cGMP manufacturing of GMP clinical trial supplies and in supporting Analytical Development activities as needed. In addition, the role is responsible for drafting, reviewing and approving key quality management system documents and analysis for process improvement and failure reduction activities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for supporting the transition of drug product manufacturing processes from the R&D formulation development phase through process optimization and scale-up for technology transfer from Phase 1 through Commercial development; and for developing and managing GMP manufacturing facilities, associated equipment and utilities. This will include the manufacture of phase 1 and 2 clinical supplies including participating in and leading the production of supplies for clinical development.  This position will be responsible for evaluating and developing modern manufacturing techniques (ex., semi-automated and automated processes, etc.) to produce modified release ophthalmic implants. The position may support both aseptically manufactured and/or terminally sterilized products.

This position will work closely with the Formulation and Device Development, Quality Assurance, non-clinical development, Clinical, Regulatory, and Material Sciences/Analytical functions; and provide support for third-party manufacturing and testing services vendors.

The Senior/Principal Process Development Engineer will also write and review Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) documents, including development protocols and reports, Regulatory Submissions, and maintain compliance with cGMP standards as appropriate for pre-clinical and clinical development.

Accountabilities

• Responsible for the support of development, tech transfer, and qualification of manufacturing processes for sterile drug products used in non-clinical and clinical development.
• Responsible for GMP facility development, maintenance, and operations.
• Responsible for developing and maintaining GMP Quality Management systems related to GMP manufacturing processes, facilities, utilities, equipment, and materials.
• Responsible for leading process optimization and validation of manufacturing processes.
• Responsible for material sourcing, material management, equipment tooling, equipment management

• Analyze and summarize complex data sets, including the use of appropriate statistical tools for the identification of Critical Process Parameters (CPP) and Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs).
• Support the execution of CMC project plans and timelines to ensure all projects are appropriately prioritized and key goals are met on time and within budget.
• Production preparation by reviewing production schedules; studying and clarifying specifications; calculating requirements; assembling and weighing materials/supplies and assisting with supply chain logistics.
• Communicate project status and concerns to supervisor and project leadership.

Key Requirements/Minimum Qualifications:

Job Overview

Perform monitoring and site management work to ensure that sites are conducting the study(ies) and reporting study data as required by the study protocol, applicable regulations and guidelines, and sponsor requirements.

Essential Functions

The Role

We are very excited to be offering an opportunity to four (4) postdoctoral researchers to join our research team. The team includes the co-applicants: Professor Ari Saranandom (Department of Biosciences), Professor Fuschia Sirois (Department of Psychology), Dr Ladan Cockshut (Assistant Professor (Research) and Co-I for Evaluation), Dr Beth Upex (Senior Technical Manager, Department of Archaeology) and Andrew Moss (Research Culture Manager, Research and Innovation Services), an external consultant and a Senior Project Manager. We are a cross-departmental and cross faculty team and will be based in a collaborative space.

Three (3) of these roles will be responsible for conducting ethnographic research into governance across selected university departments and research institutes and will co-design and deliver pilot projects aimed at improving governance structures. One (1) of the roles will work with Dr Ladan Cockshut (Co-I for evaluation) and focus on evaluation of the entire project across all of its strands of activity and interventions. These roles will be integral members of our research team, working with colleagues from a diverse range of departments and disciplines to deliver this ambitious project.

The successful applicants will be expected to:

• Carry out research and pilot projects (3 roles):
• Conduct ethnographic research, including interviews and participant observation, across selected academic departments and/or university research institutes
• Conduct literature reviews and examine documentation relating to research governance
• Use an action research approach to deliver co-designed research governance interventions
• Use a mixed methods approach to collect and analyse data, including ethnographic research in committees, creating and deploying surveys via Qualtrics and analysing quantitative data using SPSS

• Help to conduct a mixed methods evaluation of all strands of the project to ascertain its impact and the effectiveness of the project's interventions
• Attend, observe, and document Shadow Boards and any other meetings and activities of relevance to the project.

All roles will be expected to:

• Participate in regular meetings of the research team
• Produce and deliver periodic updates for the Project Oversight Group (POG)
• Publish high quality outputs, including project reports, papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops

Pedagogical Innovations In Computer Science (PICS) at Durham is a leading group in the UK for Computer Science pedagogy, hosting the national Computing Education Practice conference annually since 2017. As well as five education track academics, our members include colleagues from other research groups in the department: AIHS (AI in education) and ACiD (pedagogy of Theoretical Computer Science). The Department is one of the UK's leading Computer Science departments, with an outstanding reputation in

research, teaching, and student employability. Our internationally recognised research covers Algorithms and

The individual in this position will receive guidance and oversight from Dr Sravan Muguda Viswanath. They will also engage in collaborative efforts with fellow academics involved in the project. This role involves active participation and interaction with colleagues and both within and outside the Department. The individual taking up this position will become a part of the Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering Research (GEER) Node, which is housed within the Department of Engineering. The GEER node is dedicated to conducting specialized research focused on understanding the characteristics of unsaturated soils, earthen construction materials and bio-stabilised soils. The individual is also expected to spend a few months on secondment at the Center for Bio-mediated & Bio-inspired Geotechnics at Arizona State University, United States of America under the guidance of Dr Emmanuel Salifu.

The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Geotechnical Engineering with a particular emphasis on bio-stabilisation. The research project aims to investigate the synergy between fungi and biopolymer soil stabilisation techniques and lay scientifically validated recommendations for future in-situ applications. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct controlled tests to optimise the fungi-biopolymer combinations, conduct advanced geotechnical laboratory tests on fungi-biopolymer amended soils in relation to their unsaturated mechanical, hydraulic and durability properties, and to collaborate with researchers in the development of constitutive and numerical models. The PDRA is expected to prepare high-quality research articles and present their work to project partners and researchers at international conferences.

The Role

The Department of Physics has a funded position for an outstanding early career researcher to join the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy. For this particular post the CEA staff would like to recruit the most promising researcher and offer them the opportunity to define the direction of their research. One CEA staff member will be assigned as a primary line manager to provide the advice and mentorship all fellows in Durham receive. Other CEA staff and colleagues in the ICC and CfAI will also be available to collaborate with the fellow and offer additional advice and mentorship.
