Purpose:
Proficient in analytical method development for the introduction of new products and materials. Leads research of chemical compounds via a range of spectrosopic and analytical techniques to improve understanding of material properties as well as finding unmet needs for new and existing products. Oversees the testing of materials, finished goods, in-process and engineering samples. Reviews and approves analytical data to support manufacturing. Conducts laboratory investigations to determine root cause and implements corrective actions and preventative actions. Analyses and tests organic and inorganic compounds to identify properties for development or improvement of new or existing products.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts research to develop and improve analytical techniques, methodology and procedures.
- Develops and/or uses new or existing analytical test methods to determine quantity, quality and purity of new compounds.
- Writes reports as needed documenting findings and recommending process and/or test method improvements.
- Conducts exploratory research to gain knowledge for potential new products.
- Investigates suitable application of instruments in analysis.
- Ascertains relationships between molecular structure and physical properties to aid in analysis of new compounds.
- Reviews all analytical data for accuracy and completeness.
- Approves analytical data up to but excluding product disposition
Education and Skills:
- (Experience/Education) College degree in relevant field. PhD is highly desirable. Relevant experience gained in either medical devices or pharmaceutical company. Experience in a range of analytical method development (e.g. GPC, HPLC-CAD, MALDI, GC-FID) is highly desirable.
- (Technical/Business Knowledge/Job Skills) Comprehensive knowledge of a particular technological field. Uses in-depth knowledge of business unit functions and cross group dependencies/relationships.
- (Decision Making/Impact) Selects methods and techniques to lead a project to completion. Exercises judgement in selecting innovative, practical methods to achieve problem resolution.
- (Influence/Leadership) Understands business environment and relates extensive knowledge of internal and external technological activities to trends. Interfaces with senior management on significant matters, often requiring the coordination of activity across organisational units. Participates in the development of other technical contributors by facilitating training and providing feedback and guidance. May lead a project team. Provides technical leadership to business units. Acts as a mentor to less-experienced staff and may provide work direction or supervise other technical employees.
