The post will involve the overall management of a team of registered nurses and healthcare support workers. This requires a credible and competent leader with proven experience.
You will need to have excellent communication skills, the ability to lead and inspire a team and be prepared to work in a busy and challenging environment.

The Department Manager is accountable for the delivery of safe, high quality nursing services and care to patients within the ward or department they lead. This includes the professional and managerial leadership of staff and ensuring that clinical governance processes are firmly embedded within the area. The Department Manager will provide a visible, credible and accessible senior presence to which nursing staff, the wider multidisciplinary team and patients and their families can turn for assistance whilst role modelling the trust values. In addition the Department Manager will demonstrate compliance with the administrative and clinical systems and use these resources efficiently to support the workforce to fully utilise all their time and skills in the delivery quality care and enhanced patient experience in line with the trusts strategic objectives.

• Provide safe, effective and efficient management of delegated resources while ensuring care delivery meets and addresses the issues of spirituality, equality, diversity and rights in accordance with good practice and legislation.
• Responsible for ensuring accurate and timely written records are kept which comply with the Trust policy reporting issues as required.
• Responsible for the management and supervision of all staff including management of sickness/absence, capability and disciplinary procedures and ensure correct nursing policies and HR procedures are followed and documented.
• Responsible for ensuring there is a fair appraisal and pay progression system in place with of clear performance objectives for each staff member annually and that staff understand their individual responsibilities within this process.
• Ensure all registered nurses within the unit have the opportunity to meet their revalidation requirements.
• Promote the trust value that safeguarding is everyone’s business, in partnership with the lead nurses for all safeguarding, ensuring that current legislation is adhered to.
• Report via the trusts incident reporting system and investigate any concerns about levels of care or incidents involving patients or staff escalating to the Head of Nursing as necessary.
• Responsible for acting on and investigating any complaints or DATIX reports in line with the trusts complaints procedure, discussing and disseminating lessons learnt with the team including the Head of Nursing within the agreed investigation and reporting time frame.
• Work within Trust protocols and procedures and have full understanding of key polices such as Risk Management, Health & Safety and Infection Prevention and Control, undertaking risk assessments if gaps are identified.

• Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of implications regarding ‘Caldicott’ guidelines and act as a resource for staff. Ensure all staff have undertaken information governance training within first week of working for the trust.
• Responsible for staff having correct training consummate to the role to be able to safely use medical devices required by the cohort of patients within the ward, in accordance with medical devices policy
• Ensure the patient and patient experience is at the centre of all care decisions and developments in nursing practice.
• Act as a positive role model for all staff reflecting the values of the organisation and promoting effective communication.
• Challenge in a constructive manner any inappropriate behaviour by other staff, students and patients/visitors.
• Promote active participation in research and or audit projects that enhance quality for our patients.
• Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence based nursing care with a view to improving quality including the development and implementation of associated policies and procedures.
• Provide evidence and assurance that nursing assessments are carried out on all patients daily, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, ensuring that all staff within the post holder’s sphere of responsibility have a working knowledge of local and national policies/legislation which impacts on the care and nursing services provided.
• Responsible for ensuring that systems are in place for all staff to be assessed against key compliance with current best/evidence based practice for the services they provide.
• Responsible for ensuring there is a clear standard for communication of information within the teams and with patients and families which all staff are aware of and adhere to.
• Act on feedback received from patients/families/ friends and family test other staff groups and publicise changes made on departmental notice boards.
• Sets the expectation and the culture which promotes learning and development of all staff and students and is responsible for their mentorship.
• Acts at all times within the nursing and midwifery council code of professional conduct.
• Follows and promotes Trust policy for voicing concerns.
• Participate in the Trust’s annual appraisal system designed to identify objectives and personal development opportunities.
