Engineering Manager

Position Summary

Thales is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our NAS (Navigation And non-radar surveillance business located onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah. Thales’ Navigation And non-radar Surveillance (NAS) business segment, part of the Thales Land and Air Systems Global Business Unit, architects solutions used by over two-thirds of all planes worldwide to take off and land safely. Our Ground Navigation portfolio offers a complete range of products, which includes the latest generation of ground-based navigational aids (NAVAIDs) (e.g. ILS, DME, TACAN & VOR) and non-radar surveillance (e.g. ADS-B). With more than 10,000 NAVAIDs and non-radar surveillance installed worldwide in 180 countries, we are world leaders in the NAVAIDs market. This is an opportunity to lead a multi-disciplinary engineering team focused on the development and delivery of products and programs to a wide variety of customers in the aerospace sector; covering both the Civil and Military domains with a primary focus on Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) systems.

In this position, the Engineering Manager has two roles in the Navigation and non-radar Surveillance (NAS) Engineering Organization: Hire, manage and coach the Salt Lake City based engineering team by overseeing individual and team development, as well as being responsible for compliance with the engineering processes and tool. Perform hands-on technical management throughout all stages of product lifecycle from initial capture of customer requirements through development and deployment to the customer. This position will require a technical background and the ability to direct and manage activities based on technical and programmatic inputs. The Engineering Manager will report directly to the US Engineering Director of Thales’ NAS business segment.

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Oversight and management of the engineering team’s budgets, training and career development. Participation in Thales’ HR annual activities, resource planning (including Interns and contract engineers), performance management, hiring, training, salary planning, vacation, etc.
• Promote and allow good and harmonized deployment of process, tools and means (IT/IS) in accordance with the engineering performance plan. Address institutional organization in the country (DoD, University, Regional Organization, etc.) by completing innovation funding with local SME partner or with state innovation program.
• Contributes to system level integration in terms of requirements knowledge and expectations, planning, scheduling and execution of hardware and software integration project and programs.
• Contributes to Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) & schedule estimates and supports proposals, customer presentations, and new product design.
• Acts as technical Point-Of-Contact (POC) for Thales customers.
• Representing engineering across disciplines including Programs, Industry, Services, Bids and Operations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Systems, Electrical, Software Engineering, or other technical field and 10+ years related technical work experience
• 10+ years’ experience managing/leading teams. Must be self-starter and motivated to work in a fast-paced environment. Previous experience in planning, budgeting, implementing, and monitoring engineering projects. Demonstrated ability to apply technical knowledge to monitor project activities.
• Strong analytical abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to multitask across the organization, local and global, on various technical and non-technical subject matters.
• Proven ability to work in a multinational and multicultural team with varied degrees of experience. Experience with requirement management tools, configuration management tools, technical documentation tools, and problem reporting tools. Experience working in collaborative environments (e.g. Cloud, Obeya, Problem solving, Kaizen). Proven level of experience in team motivation, team leadership, staff development, performance management, and mentoring.
• Must be a US Person as defined in applicable law.
• Must be a U.S. Person as defined in applicable law, or otherwise authorized or eligible for   authorization, to access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

As we accelerate design and development of new and innovative digital health products at Alcon, a dedicated product manager focusing on software engineering and support experience for the engineer persona is critical for aligning product development with the needs of engineering teams, optimizing processes, enhancing user experience, providing effective support, and fostering continuous improvement. In this role, you will oversee the standardization of DevOps practices, adoption of leading-edge software tools, and drive process improvements for production support metrics and SLAs as new digital health products are deployed to our customers. This role requires strong collaboration and communication with various cross-functional teams including Digital Health Product/Engineering, R&D, IT and Digital Operations, in support of Alcon’s Global Digital Transformation. This will be in our Fort Worth, Texas office and a typical day will include:

• Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy and roadmap for engineering and support experience across all Digital Health Foundational Services, integrating DevOps practices and leading-edge software tools adoption.
• Work closely with engineering teams to standardize DevOps practices, identify and adopt cutting-edge software tools, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and secure Digital Health Foundational Services.
• Lead efforts to improve the customer support experience, including process improvements, revamping L3/L4 production support metrics and SLAs, to ensure timely and effective resolution of customer issues for newly deployed digital health products.
• Collaborate with Digital Health, R&D, IT and regional/service teams to prioritize features, enhancements, and bug fixes based on customer feedback, business impact, and technical feasibility.
• Communicate regularly with stakeholders, including executive leadership, to provide updates on the status of engineering and support initiatives, key metrics, and strategic direction.
• Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to engineering and support experience, analyze data to find opportunities for improvement, and drive continuous optimization efforts.
• Perform regular product demos with the larger cross-functional team.
• Stay current with the latest trends in digital health and modern Software engineering tools and practices

Essential Job Accountabilities

• Perform accurate project revenue and cost financial forecasting to ensure corporate profitability goals are met.

• Coordinate with estimators and project controls group to establish budget.

• Lead estimating efforts on vertically integrated projects to ensure accurate and consistent bid to build process.

• Coordinate with large project sponsor, manager of construction and project team to develop comprehensive plan for project start up and successful kick-off. 

• Provide environment where dynamic project communication occurs between Project Engineers, Foremen, Superintendents and Construction Manager to ensure work is accomplished in an efficient, profitable, and safe manner.

• Ensure proper job controls, i.e. quantities, costs, revenue and schedule.

• Establish and maintain working relationships with owners, agencies, subcontractors, corporate management, inspectors, etc., providing customer service to develop long-term partnerships with client base.

• Ensure accurate construction reports for the job allowing for continuous improvement in performance. 

• Run projects at profitability levels to meet or exceed expected margins.

• Comply, understand, and support corporate safety initiatives to ensure a safe work environment.

Education

• BS degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent work experience in heavy civil construction.

Work Experience

• Five (5) to ten (10) years progressive project experience in heavy civil environments.

• Minimum of five (5) years experience in paving, dirt, and grading in either private or public environments.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

• Knowledge of construction paving, underground, concrete and grading practices.

• Knowledge and understanding of union agreements and prevailing wage issues.

• Maintain ability to work in high production environment.

• Demonstrated decision-making skills.

• Excellent leadership skills.

• Excellent supervisory communication and organizational skills.

• Accuracy at all times.
