East Lancashire Child and Adolescent Service (ELCAS) has secured funding for a fantastic training opportunity for a new Band 5 Mental Health Practitioner. The successful candidate will be employed by ELCAS delivering systemic family interventions to Children, Young People and their Families, presenting with behaviour difficulties, low mood and self-harm, whilst also completing an AFT accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Systemic Family Practice (SFP). The successful candidates will complete the course as Systemic Family Practitioners, with a nationally recognised qualification that is equivalent to Intermediate level Family Therapy. Therefore, we are seeking enthusiastic individuals with a passion for working with children, who want to develop their skills and knowledge as part of future career progression.

Candidates can be from a number of relevant professional backgrounds, including Psychiatric Nurses, Mental Health Social Workers, Occupational Therapists in Mental Health and Accredited Counsellors. Successful candidates will usually have some existing knowledge and experience of systemic interventions. Experience of at least 2 years clinical work with children and young people is essential. Psychology graduates and other professionals such as support workers who work therapeutically with children, young people and families are welcome to apply. However, at least 4 years experience of working with children and young people would usually be required in this instance.

This exciting one-year fixed-term training post will see successful candidates working in ELCAS as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering, under supervision, high-quality, outcome-informed, systemic family interventions (SFP) to children, young people and their families three days per week. Two days will then be spent completing the AFT accredited Postgraduate Diploma in SFP through GMMH PTTC based at Prestwich, Manchester, in partnership with the University of Manchester.

Successful candidates will receive high quality clinical supervision both in service and as part of the course, will carry a small caseload of suitable training cases (around 6 to 8 at any one time) and will complete the course with a nationally recognised qualification in SFP.

Successful candidates will be expected to start their employment and be available to start this training post in early January 2025 and remain in post for 1 year until they complete the course. Acceptance of this post includes a commitment to organize annual leave around the requirements of the training course.

The role involves travel between sites, so access to transport for work purposes is essential. Due to current circumstances the role currently combines home working as well as working in community/hospital settings.

These posts are apprenticeship posts which will see you develop to a NMC registered Nursing Associate, completing a 2 year foundation degree training programme. The course is fully funded.

Interviews are scheduled for the 21st to 23rd May 2024 (provisional dates - subject to change) at the Lantern Centre, Preston (TBC).If this venue changes, we can confirm interviews will still be in the Preston locality.

As a trainee you will be based within clinical practice for the duration of the programme and will have study leave to attend University. You will rotate through different services within your speciality / service area (where applicable) and undertake block placements outside of your normal place of work, to gain a breadth of experience and skills.

Travel is required so you must be able to fulfil the essential travel requirements whilst on placement. You could be expected to travel up to 90 minutes each way to placement and work shifts and weekends.

You will need to demonstrate an understanding of mental healthcare and the role of a Nursing Associate and show evidence of being an effective communicator with the people you care for, their families and carers, as well as your colleagues and superiors.

You will need to be prepared to work hard and undertake study in your own time while on the programme; learning the fundamentals of exceptional care and developing your depth of knowledge around important aspects of both physical and mental health.



Please be advised if you are a ‘Non-UK National’ applicant you must meet the eligibility criteria and fulfil the settlement requirements of the apprenticeship course funding. Your settlement status will need to be verified as eligible for funding by the relevant apprenticeship provider in order for you to formally enrol on the course.

2. Minimum 3 years residing in the UK (pre-enrolment onto apprenticeship)

For internal candidates – you will need to have agreement from your manager to apply for this post, which will be verified if successful. As you will be on a Trust secondment contract, in the event of needing to withdraw from the programme.

On completion of the course you will be placed into a permanent band 4 Nursing Associate role within the Trust, however this may not be in your current work place.

During training you will be paid a Band 3 and there will be an expectation to work 37.5 hours.

If successful in securing a place on the course you WILL NOT be eligible for student finance.
