JOB DESCRIPTION FOR CLINICAL FELLOW IN ONCOLOGY Title of Post: Clinical Fellow in HCC and Liver surveillance service evaluation fellow Nature of Appointment: Fixed-term, Full Time Post Responsible To: Dr Kiruthikah Thillai and Dr Terry Wong Accountable To: Clinical Director Dr Hartmut Kristeleit Employing Authority: Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust The Clinical Service Evaluation Fellow will focus on evaluating liver surveillance practices for patients at risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This role involves analysing current protocols, identifying gaps in care, and assessing the effectiveness of surveillance methods for patients at risk of developing HCC. The fellow will collect and interpret data to ensure best practices align with clinical guidelines, aiming to improve patient outcomes by enhancing early diagnosis and timely intervention in at-risk populations. Findings will guide recommendations for optimising liver surveillance services with an opportunity to write guidelines. The post holder will work in the hepatocellular carcinoma clinic at Kings College Hospital NHS Trust for one clinic and will work across the South East London Cancer Alliance to collate data for 4 days in the week. Guys Cancer Centre Guy's and St Thomas' hosts a Joint Cancer Centre with King's College Hospital that offers a full range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of all adult cancers. Patients from across South East London attend for treatment which is not available at their local hospital. The Trust's cancer services are provided at both Guy's and St Thomas' sites as well as a satellite site at Queen Marys Sidcup, Kent. GSTT aims to build an internationally renowned Comprehensive Cancer Centre by: Providing the very best cancer service to patients by combining first class clinical care with ground-breaking research and high quality training and development Improving outcomes and experience for cancer patients with complex needs through earlier diagnosis, effective treatment and the provision of high quality survivorship care Embedding whole person care across the cancer pathway and striving to bring treatment programmes closer to home Developing and testing new biological and cellular therapies in a range of cancers, in close partnership with the School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences of Kings College London. Opening a new £160 million cancer centre at Guys Hospital in 2016 and a sister centre in Bexley in 2017, which are transforming the delivery of cancer services, so patients will receive the right treatment at the right time, delivered within fewer visits and tailored to their need. Clinical Aims To bring together the majority of cancer care and translational research under one roof, so that patients are given seamless care and staff can work together on diagnosing, treating and applying research into cancer. To improve supportive care, patient information and complementary therapies at each stage of the patient pathway to improve patients quality of life both during treatment and into recovery and survivorship. To deliver compassionate care and a world class service Department Information Oncology forms part of the Oncology and Haematology Clinical Directorate within Guys and St Thomas Hospital NHS Foundation trust (GSTFT). The department is internationally distinguished for its commitment to research & development and constantly strives for excellence through dedication and innovation. Oncology at GSTFT has entered a new and exciting phase with a state of the art cancer centre on the Guys site. The Cancer Centre at Guys Hospital opened in September 2016, providing a single point for both diagnosis and treatment. This centre is the hub for South East London providing specialist cancer services, training, development and research, facilitating better treatment and improved outcomes for patients. Cancer Care data Number of ambulatory day care beds/chairs (outpatients) 44 chairs (these are based in the Cancer Day Unit and the Haematology Day Unit). 10 beds (these are based in several locations across the Day Units) 3 treatment chairs and 6 beds in the Clinical Research Facility at Guys Number of inpatient beds: There are 802 beds at the St Thomass site and 288 beds at Guys site - total of 1090 beds across site 84 Cancer beds (core beds, made up of Medical Oncology, Clinical Oncology, Haematology, and Breast & Thoracic Surgery) Main place of employment: The post will be based at the Guys campus. Job Summary The post holder will work one day a week at Kings College Hospital working within the medical oncology team in the hepatocellular clinic and as part of a wider multi-discipline service. The hepatology service is an internationally recognised unit with highly specialised clinics. The post holder will see a combination of new and follow up patients and be expected to prescribe systemic anti cancer therapies under the supervision of the consultant team. The remaining 4 days will be spent on a project reviewing, collating and analysing patient data across the South East London Cancer Alliance. This will be under the supervision of the Kings College London epidemiology team who will support the project. The post holder will be expected to attend the Guys Cancer clinical fellow teaching program and will be given an educational supervisor. Duties and responsibilities: Clinical: The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of Oncology services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include: (a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the Trust. b. Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff. c. The bulk of the role will be in the Clinical Research Facility and Outpatient Clinics. Training of junior staff: The postholders will not have direct responsibility for training of junior staff Teaching: The postholder may contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students if they wish. Clinical Governance: All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal. Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours: There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements. Educational Programme: Neither the London Deanery not the Royal College of Physicians accredits this post for postgraduate training. However, the postholder will be invited to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, imaging meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc. Appraisal: All medical and dental staff are required to undertake appraisal. Confidentiality / Data Protection / Freedom of Information: Postholders must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 1998. Post holders must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. If any member of staff has communicated any such information to an unauthorised person those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act 1998 also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information. Following the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) 2005, post holders must apply the Trusts FOI procedure if they receive a written request for information. Information Governance All staff must comply with information governance requirements. These includes statutory responsibilities (such as compliance with the Data Protection Act), following national guidance (such as the NHS Confidentiality Code of Practice) and compliance with local policies and procedures (such as the Trust's Confidentiality policy).
