Overview

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is the world governing body for the sport and has its

headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Badminton has been an Olympic Games sport since the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and a

sport on the Paralympic Games programme since 2014.

The BWF has 202 Members who are responsible for administering, regulating and developing

badminton in their territory.

The BWF, its Members and Continental Confederations (CCs) work together in a coordinated

approach to develop the sport globally. The five CCs - Badminton Africa, Badminton Asia,

Badminton Europe, Badminton Oceania, Badminton Pan America work with the membership to

develop the sport in their region.

The BWF Council is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the BWF, as

well as the oversight of its management and corporate performance in accordance with the BWF’s

Strategic Plan. The Council is appointed by the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for a four-year term

and it reports to the membership at its AGM.

The Secretary General is the head of staff and responsible for day-to-day operations. The

Secretary General is responsible for implementing policies and programmes in line with the

Strategic Plan. The Secretary General is accountable to the Council.
