To assist with the implementation and maintenance of efficient office management systems and procedures to enable our team to optimise their standards of service. The post holder will be instrumental in implementing team objectives to enhance the performance and development of the research teams whilst providing guidance, education, leadership and co-ordinating the portfolio of research studies and clinical trials to deliver high quality research and clinical care.

The role integrates both clinical duties such as maintaining an active caseload and managerial duties; as such the post holder will be required to effectively manage their time to fulfil key responsibilities. It is also expected that the post holder will be flexible with hours of work as required to ensure that we are offering a service that best suits the needs of our patients.

The post holder will be employed by Research and Development department (R&D) to work within the central clinical research teams, managing an allocated number of research teams.

However, it is expected that the post folder will work flexibly across other research speciality areas as service requirements dictate throughout the duration of their contract.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of several of the R&D clinical research studies and teams. The post holder will be supporting the safe conduct of research in accordance with the regulatory and legal frameworks relating to the planning, undertaking and closure of research studies providing assurance that the rights and well being of trial participants are protected.

Clinical

• Ensure the safe administration of treatments and drugs that are given within the context of a clinical trial by all team members.

• Ensure staff monitor treatment toxicity/side effects reporting to the relevant personnel, recording as required assisting in any required changes to treatment as required by the protocol

• Ensure all staff record and report adverse /serious adverse events as classified in the study protocol criteria which occur whilst patient is in the clinical trial e.g. hospital admission since last study visit

• Ensure accurate documentation of patient’s events in nursing/medical notes and study specific case report forms.

• Provide ongoing information, education and support to patients (and their significant others) regarding clinical trials and their care.




Research and Portfolio Management

• Lead in the delivery of studies within the relevant specialities ensuring they meet the requirements with regards to the Department of Health’s Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care and the EU Clinical Trials legislation by implementing quality systems.

• Assist in the review of study protocols and contribute to the feasibility/study selection process, advising on safety, regulatory and logistical issues.

The Coventry Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) is a part of a national programme funded until 2027 by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). What is the job role?

We are looking for a Project Assistant to work as part of the Coventry HDRC.

The important role will support the Coventry HDRC team in organisation, coordination and administration of key functions of HDRC. The role will ensure the smooth running of the require working with people from a range of organisations including universities, hospitals as well as statutory and voluntary agencies.

The post holder will assist the Head of R&D and research leads to promote and support clinical research supported by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW). Together with the R&D Director and Head of R&D, the Research Development Manager will play a vital role in the continuing development of the locally developed Research and Grant Portfolio. As well as being managerially responsible for R&D administrative staff, the post holder will provide day-to-day operational support to the R&D Director, Head of R&D and Management team and will be responsible for actioning any special projects at their request.

The post holder will lead on Research Development at UHCW by advising and assisting staff to produce high quality grant proposals and applications for funding to external bodies. In addition, be responsible and accountable for leading the research development team, delegating and overseeing tasks, undertaking mandatory requirements and providing learning and development opportunities.

The role includes supporting the Trust to develop research partnerships and collaborations, particularly with the Trust’s academic partners and collaborations with industry.
• The post holder will be the first point of contract at the beginning of the research process and will agree with the clinical research lead the support requirements for each project.
• Prepare proposals and applications to external funding bodies. In particular, contribute to the content of proposals to improve quality and ensure they conform to the guidelines and selection criteria of the appropriate funding agency. This includes providing accurate NHS costing in line with AcoRD, contributing text, providing comments on drafts, suggesting potential collaborators and negotiating sponsorship arrangements.
• For successful grant applications, oversee the contracting process with the funder and partnership agreements with collaborators to ensure roles and responsibilities are understood and grant income schedules are clear.
• Develop and establish research collaborations. Develop relationships to facilitate the interface between UHCW, the University of Warwick and Coventry University and other strategic partners including grant awarding bodies.
• Provide effective leadership, supervision and line management of the R&D administration team and associated staff.
• Work with local research leads to promote and encourage new research studies, attending and presenting at local meetings as required.
• Contribute to the R&D Strategy and Trust Corporate Objectives, acting according to local Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.

A vacancy has arisen for a Band 5 nurse to join an established team in supporting clinical research in Critical Care and Emergency Medicine based at University Hospital, Coventry. Applications are welcomed from individuals with recent experience in an acute care setting who can demonstrate the knowledge and skills that would enable them to succeed in this post. Research nurses need to be empathetic and adept at establishing rapport with patients, their families and members of the multi-disciplinary teams involved in their care. Other key characteristics that help to make a good research nurse include resourcefulness, flexibility, and the willingness to adapt to the needs of the moment.

The ideal candidate will be dedicated to improving patient care, eager to learn, have an eye for detail and be able to demonstrate excellent documentation, organisational and time management skills. The post holder will work in conjunction with other team members to ensure that all research is conducted to the highest standards, safeguarding the wellbeing of the participants, in accordance with all current legislative, ethical and governance principles and policies.

While experience in clinical research and/or one of the specialties mentioned above would be desirable, all relevant training will be provided.

This post offers the potential for the successful candidate to progress to a Band 6 research sister/charge nurse position within 12 to 18 months. Please note that progression is dependent on achieving the following criteria: completion of all relevant training, sign off for all the core R&D competencies, ability to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge in practice and a satisfactory appraisal. If the criteria have not been met by month 18 there will be no automatic upgrade and progression to a band 6 post would be in the usual way (by application and interview), when an opportunity arises.

Typical activities in this role include being actively involved in the recruitment of patients to a range of research studies (e.g., obtaining consent, collecting data and biological samples), managing a study caseload and liaising with academic and commercial sponsor organisations, both national and international.

New starters undergo an induction programme and relevant training to help them complete their research competency package. During this time they have opportunities to observe and practice the varied aspects of the research nurse role and, when ready, will take the lead on a small number of simple studies while working with other team members on those which are more complex.

Please note that this is a full-time post worked over 5 days (Monday to Friday), usually from 08:00-16:00 with the need to be flexible if required.
