The Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Research group in the School of Clinical and Experimental Sciences wish to appoint two Research Facilitators to help support the technical aspects of research activities and to assist with the day to day running of research studies undertaken by the group. The research group is based within the Faculty of Medicine at Southampton General Hospital.

Our group is undertaking a number of projects looking at the epidemiology of respiratory pathogens. Applications are invited from those with relevant experience of laboratory based microbiology and experience of research governance. Experience of bacterial identification is desirable. These posts are full-time but consideration will be given to those who wish to work part-time. Applicants must be available to work with some flexibility.

A Research Technician position is available in the Centre for Cancer Immunology at Southampton General Hospital. This is a newly constructed, dedicated research building that is the result of a significant fund-raising campaign. It builds on a 40 year history of pioneering immunology and cancer research at Southampton, and represents the first dedicated cancer immunology centre in the UK. The activities in this centre span from pioneering discovery science to applied research and preclinical modelling and, crucially, onto first-in-human clinical trials and beyond. The centre houses world-class research facilities, including state-of-the-art scientific laboratories and a clinical trials unit.

The position is associated with the laboratory of Professors Ward and Ober. Their interdisciplinary research program is dedicated to the development of novel antibody-based therapeutics for the treatment of cancer and autoimmunity. This research has led to several therapeutics that are currently in advanced clinical trials or approved for clinical use. The group also develops advanced microscopy techniques for the evaluation of novel therapeutics in cellular environments. Their research is supported by major grants from the Welcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and support from collaborating biopharma companies.

The appointee will be highly motivated and excited by the challenges involved in supporting a dynamic, interdisciplinary group of researchers. The appointee’s role will be to provide support with the day-to-day running of the laboratory by providing technical support for the experimental work of post-doctoral fellows, research scientists and graduate students, combined with the ordering and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and supplies. The position holder will be expected to be familiar with biosafety and other regulatory processes and follow these procedures as necessary.

It is essential to have a skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 with proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training. The role requires the ability to plan and organise your workload, work well under pressure and communicate effectively and professionally with other laboratory members. A scientific knowledge in a biological field equivalent to B.Sc. level is extremely desirable.

You will work on the development of small uncrewed aircraft in the area of closely-coupled rotor research. This is part of the £1.2M Closely-Coupled Rotors EPSRC-funded research project in collaboration with colleagues in Aeronautics, Aeroacoustics and ISVR.

The project will develop new methods and tools to design a new generation of urban unmanned aircraft. The project is specifically developed around a long-standing industrial challenge: reducing noise disruption caused by small multi-rotor uncrewed aircraft. The focus of the work at Southampton will consist of developing VTOL aerial platforms which can safely, reliably and quietly fly into urban cities to undertake servicing and delivery tasks. To enable this, new thinking is required in propulsion technology, particularly around the design of the propeller.

The project will contribute to:

Improved aerial operations in the urban environment.
Reduce noise disruption caused by urban servicing and delivery operations.
New thinking on flight within congested and cluttered environments.
Lobbying the regulation bodies, such as the CAA and EASA for relaxation of rules and permissions to operate in urban areas.
It is essential that you have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Unmanned Systems and have an excellent research track record. Further experience of designing, building and operating small multi-rotor aircraft would be advantageous.

What skills and experience we're looking for

Your role

• To assist the Head of Science in leading the strategic direction of the department, fostering a love of science by improving the quality of provision and ensuring positive outcomes for our students. This will involve setting high expectations to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality teaching and learning and high achievement of all students.

Key Responsibilities

• To hold and articulate clear values and moral purpose, focused on providing an excellent education for students in science.
• To demonstrate optimistic personal behaviour, positive relationships and attitudes towards students, staff, parents and members of the local community.
• To sustain wide, current knowledge and understanding of science teaching, and pursue continuous professional development.
• To support the strategic leadership of science, empowering all students and staff to excel.
• Support the Head of Science in developing and implementing policies for science in line with WSS’s commitment to high-quality teaching and learning
• Promote Science, its importance, and the value that it brings across the WSS community
• Have a good understanding of how well Science is being delivered and the impact it has on student achievement
• Use this understanding to feed into the WSS School Improvement Plan and support the Head of Science in producing an action plan for the subject
• Promote students’ spiritual, moral, social, cultural, physical and mental development alongside British values in the teaching of science
• Consult students, parents and staff about science and its effectiveness, and assess the feedback against the school’s values, visions and aims
• Work with the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) to ensure the curriculum matches the needs of different students, such as disadvantaged students and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)
• Promote careers education through science and ensure that teaching and learning illustrates how Science might lead to career opportunities
• Use additional staff in science to ensure there is a framework for deployments and that teaching assistants are deployed effectively
• Liaise with Upper Shirley High, the other secondary school within HET, to ensure sharing of best practice and development of a science network at secondary level
• Liaise with HET and the Local Authority where relevant on subject-related events, projects and activities
