Newly-hired mathematicians and mathematical statisticians begin their careers in the Mathematics Development Program (MDP). The goal of the three-year MDP is to provide on-the-job training in the broad range of mathematical and statistical sciences at NSA. This is primarily accomplished through 6-month tours in NSA offices of the MDP participant's choosing. Mentorship is provided for each tour and participants work on real mission problems.

MDP members also study cryptologic mathematics, statistical data mining, and related subjects in courses taught by Agency experts. Participants are required to develop skills in programming and using computational resources to solve mission problems. Various short-term and long-term travel opportunities exist for interested participants but are not required. MDP members are able to take advantage of other professional development opportunities available at NSA as well. This includes continuing education opportunities and optional Agency courses in everything from professional communication to goal setting to machine learning. Career mentorship and participation in professional networks such as WIMS (Women in the Mathematical Sciences) are strongly supported. We are currently searching for a Research Assistant in Epidemiology. The position will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Cancer Institute, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. This is a full-time opportunity located in Rockville, MD.

• Contribute to all aspects of the project management, data stewardship and harmonization in the Confluence Project a large multi-ancestry genome-wide association study to investigate the genetic architecture of breast cancer and improve risk prediction and prognosis of the disease and in the Ghana Breast Health Study a population-based case-control study of breast cancer environmental and genetic risk factors in Ghanaian women.

• Assist under the supervision of senior staff the development, maintenance, and monitoring updating of data platforms for epidemiological research, including but not limited to the Confluence data platform.

• Assist with performing database management of multiple cancer epidemiology studies, including but not limited to, dataset creation including merging and/or concatenation, data cleaning identify and correct data entry errors and/or missing values, data transformation create and categorize variables; impute data and delivering data to staff and scientist. This task will require working within a cloud-based data platform.

• Assist with compiling data needed for budget planning, and with preparing material needed for setting up contracts with extramural investigators.

• Produce publication quality, informative graphical representations of images from research studies.

• Contribute to data quality control and analyze Annual Report System ARS data to develop reports and presentations.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position provides coordination of investigational and research protocols. Coordinates operational aspects of research projects including project preparation, subject recruitment, protocol execution, data collection, and coordination and database entry.

CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Promotes research study initiation and review. 4. Performs accurate data collection and reporting according to protocol requirements and completes applicable forms and/or other required reports in a timely manner. Develops and implements patient tracking and follow-up systems. Coordinates with participating physicians offices and staff for patient follow-up.

5. Assists in educating patients about research studies and in obtaining informed consent from project participants. Assists with patient recruitment, screening, diagnostics, treatment and education. 6. Assists in the development and maintenance of budget and/or contract agreements. Follows policy requirements for reporting patient enrollment in an effort to ensure compliance with billing. Assists in the development of accounting reports and in coordination of billing systems.

7. Coordinates and safely implements research activities through interactions with research staff, internal and external investigators, study sponsors and Institutional Review Board (IRB).

8. Participates in the development of clinical research protocols. Performs accurate and timely data collection and reporting according to protocol requirements. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

Must possess a thorough knowledge of nursing and healthcare as normally demonstrated through the completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Requires a current Registered Nurse (R.N.) license.

Experience typically gained through two years clinical research experience or experience related to clinical area in which research study is based. Previous relevant experience working in a clinical research setting. Knowledge of medical and clinical terminology. Excellent organizational and task management skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and study information. Ability to maintain knowledge of Federal and State regulations governing practice as well as Institute policies and procedures related to medical and nursing practice. Excellent human relations, organizational and communication skills.

In this role, a typical day will include:

• Troubleshoot line/equipment mechanical and electrical problems, and perform efficient corrective maintenance to bring line/equipment back into a running and reliable state.

• Write and implement SOPs and Preventive Maintenance (PM) procedures.

• Identify and implement mechanical/electrical changes to enhance quality, compliance, reliability and reduce cost, following cGMP and SOPs, with minimal supervision.

• Work with Production to determine line/equipment reliability issues; provide regular feedback on line/equipment status and estimated time to repair.

• Safely use maintenance hand/power tools and test equipment.

• Technical: Troubleshoot and maintain equipment to fill and package products in accordance with standards and procedures (cGMP, SOPs, etc.).

• Perform technical setup of line/equipment for daily operation, according to SOP for assigned work area.

• Maintain aseptic personnel certification, and practice good aseptic techniques in performance of duties.

• Assist plant engineers in new equipment startups and engineering changes.

• Support training of new coworkers, and share knowledge and experience with coworkers to develop team’s overall capability.

Digital Twin of Eye is a Modeling and Simulation (M&S) driven research and development project, specifically in the area of computational human eye model development to support R&D device / therapy development and interaction with human eye.

Key Responsibilities:

• Drive our vision to develop digital twin of eye, a set of physically realistic multi-physics simulation models of human eye, that will enable accurate modeling of key aspects of ocular physiology pertaining to the interaction of the human eye with Alcon's products and systems.

• Establish future strategy and direction for digital twin of eye modeling project in alignment with R&D’s strategic plans within multiple technology platforms.

• As an expert in computational modeling and simulation (FEA and CFD) drive innovation and ensure high quality decision making through effective application of Modeling and Simulation for the eye model

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing research clinical conduct and data collection and entry support for oncology focused clinical research studies.  Duties include handling key operational functions for oncology research studies and abstracting relevant research related data from medical records and source documents, populating, and coordinating use of research data bases and data sources, quality review, training, report production, and submission of collected research data. 

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Under the direction of the RN Specialist, Clinical Research Coordinator or principal investigator, coordinates research protocols including arranging necessary appointments and procedures, working collaboratively with other departments and institutions, and maintaining contact with study participants.

2. Maintains patient calendars, screening, and enrollment information utilizing departmental databases/tools to ensure compliance with protocol requirements.

3. Completes initial intake on participants for research studies. Determines participant eligibility based on study specific criteria. Verifies that patients have completed appropriate registration materials and maintains related records and information. Obtains and reviews relevant medical history with participants.

4. Accountable for completing entire informed consent process, which includes proper consent discussion & documentation according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and departmental SOPs while assuring compliance with all relevant IRB and applicable regulatory agency requirements. 

5. Collects required data by utilizing Cerner and other electronic databases, records obtained from external physician’s offices, patient interviews, and other sources. Accurately enters data into the clinical research forms through computerized databases.

6. Maintains and updates department specific databases. Develops and implements efficient data collection tools and methods. Develops and manipulates spreadsheets. Performs internal data quality reviews for accuracy and quality of data collection. Prepares, updates, and organizes tracking logs and patient research files. Identifies and communicates important protocol and data management issues or problems to leadership.

7. Submits data to appropriate agencies and maintains established quarterly reporting rates. Uses electronic data capture. Complies with federal reporting requirements. Answers requests for requested data, extracts data from assigned facility data base and generates reports as needed. Submits forms and other reports in a timely manner and maintains all source documentation. Performs data outcomes analysis, creates data reports, and works on special data management projects as assigned.

8. Facilitates monitoring and audit related activities as directed and assists in training of new staff members as directed.

9. May serve as a backup, collecting and processing phlebotomy specimens for analysis using appropriate or specified equipment. Ensures proper labeling and obtains pertinent clinical and protocol information on request forms. Performs vital signs and EKG as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess relevant knowledge as typically obtained by completion of an associates degree in healthcare, research, or related field and two years previous research or health care experience or equivalent knowledge/experience in a healthcare or research setting.

Knowledge of regulatory affairs and current issues concerning the conduct of clinical research or health care operations. Knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to interpret laboratory reports and understand disease processes and testing with an understanding of disease staging and status. • Possess a comprehensive knowledge of device development, material properties, fluid mechanics, and critical quality attributes that can impact the performance of the products.
• Support and lead the device related regulatory document preparation for registration dossiers and brand related medical information, communication, publications (510(k), CE Mark, Japan, CTD’s, Envisa’s, NDA, IND, etc) Ensuring timely responses to Health Authorities questions for support of regulatory dossiers.
• Support and lead the device(s) related document preparation for Investigator Brochures (IB) in support of clinical studies.
• Support existing device and ophthalmic packaging by addressing select product support requests and addressing questions on existing products.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO ALCON:

• Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school+15 yrs; Assoc.+11 yrs; M.S.+4 yrs; PhD+3 yrs)
• The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English.
• 7 Years of Relevant Experience
• Work hours: Exempt- Mon-Fri
• Travel Requirements: 10-15%

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience in Medical Device Design and Development preferred.
• Proficiency in CAD. SolidWorks or Creo preferred.
• Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principals, materials, fluidics, etc.
• Demonstrated skill in engineering design tools, modelling, engineering analysis, etc.
• Ability to work under minimum oversight to identify and prioritize work activities as necessary to achieve project goals within set timelines.
• Ability to produce high quality work output capable of meeting project needs, even when operating under tight timelines.
• Successfully provide design leadership to new ophthalmic product development projects.
• Work efficiently and productively with other team members and external partners.
• Adheres to Alcon's guidelines for appropriate workplace behaviors and attitudes.
• Ability to operate and influence cross-functionally, cross-culturally, and in matrix organizations.
• Candidates who have both medical device and fluid system design backgrounds will be given preference.
