The Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Research group in the School of Clinical and Experimental Sciences wish to appoint two Research Facilitators to help support the technical aspects of research activities and to assist with the day to day running of research studies undertaken by the group. The research group is based within the Faculty of Medicine at Southampton General Hospital.

Our group is undertaking a number of projects looking at the epidemiology of respiratory pathogens. Applications are invited from those with relevant experience of laboratory based microbiology and experience of research governance. Experience of bacterial identification is desirable. These posts are full-time but consideration will be given to those who wish to work part-time. Applicants must be available to work with some flexibility.

A Research Technician position is available in the Centre for Cancer Immunology at Southampton General Hospital. This is a newly constructed, dedicated research building that is the result of a significant fund-raising campaign. It builds on a 40 year history of pioneering immunology and cancer research at Southampton, and represents the first dedicated cancer immunology centre in the UK. The activities in this centre span from pioneering discovery science to applied research and preclinical modelling and, crucially, onto first-in-human clinical trials and beyond. The centre houses world-class research facilities, including state-of-the-art scientific laboratories and a clinical trials unit.

The position is associated with the laboratory of Professors Ward and Ober. Their interdisciplinary research program is dedicated to the development of novel antibody-based therapeutics for the treatment of cancer and autoimmunity. This research has led to several therapeutics that are currently in advanced clinical trials or approved for clinical use. The group also develops advanced microscopy techniques for the evaluation of novel therapeutics in cellular environments. Their research is supported by major grants from the Welcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and support from collaborating biopharma companies.

The appointee will be highly motivated and excited by the challenges involved in supporting a dynamic, interdisciplinary group of researchers. The appointee’s role will be to provide support with the day-to-day running of the laboratory by providing technical support for the experimental work of post-doctoral fellows, research scientists and graduate students, combined with the ordering and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and supplies. The position holder will be expected to be familiar with biosafety and other regulatory processes and follow these procedures as necessary.

It is essential to have a skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 with proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training. The role requires the ability to plan and organise your workload, work well under pressure and communicate effectively and professionally with other laboratory members. A scientific knowledge in a biological field equivalent to B.Sc. level is extremely desirable.

The post-holders will possess relevant academic qualifications and work experience as well as good IT skills.

The position is for two years until 28/06/2026. Availability of funds for a period beyond the two-year timeframe is anticipated.

You will work on the development of small uncrewed aircraft in the area of closely-coupled rotor research. This is part of the £1.2M Closely-Coupled Rotors EPSRC-funded research project in collaboration with colleagues in Aeronautics, Aeroacoustics and ISVR.

The project will develop new methods and tools to design a new generation of urban unmanned aircraft. The project is specifically developed around a long-standing industrial challenge: reducing noise disruption caused by small multi-rotor uncrewed aircraft. The focus of the work at Southampton will consist of developing VTOL aerial platforms which can safely, reliably and quietly fly into urban cities to undertake servicing and delivery tasks. To enable this, new thinking is required in propulsion technology, particularly around the design of the propeller.

The project will contribute to:

Improved aerial operations in the urban environment.
Reduce noise disruption caused by urban servicing and delivery operations.
New thinking on flight within congested and cluttered environments.
Lobbying the regulation bodies, such as the CAA and EASA for relaxation of rules and permissions to operate in urban areas.

We are seeking a full-time Research Fellow to support the NIHR ARC Wessex project FORTH – FORecasting Turbulence in Hospitals for a fixed term of 17 months. It is an exciting opportunity to be involved in interdisciplinary research that will underpin innovative solutions for healthcare management.

The Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Wessex is an organisation funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) with a remit to support applied health and care research that responds to, and meets, the needs of local populations and local health and care systems. The NIHR ARC Wessex is one of 15 ARCs across England, which aims to improve the health and care of patients and the public within and beyond the Wessex region.

Our ARC conducts applied health research to improve patient outcomes; quality, delivery and efficiency of health and care services; increase the sustainability of health and care systems through collaborative partnership. We have a close relationship with regional stakeholders, including NHS organisations, universities, charities, local authorities and others.

FORTH aims to understand how demand surges for acute hospitals lead to slower and chaotic patient flow, a phenomenon we call turbulence, which affects the hospital's ability to deliver quality care. We will analyse a large dataset containing Electronic Health Records, aiming to define and understand the causes of turbulence. We will then create models for short-term prediction of turbulence, to help hospitals develop proactive demand management plans.

The successful candidate will to work with the team to achieve the objectives and be responsible for the technical work regarding data analysis and implementation of various models, which will require programming proficiency. For example, you will use artificial intelligence (machine learning) to predict the remainder of a patient's spell at a hospital, given their characteristics and the activities carried out in the current stay. You will also develop models that combine individual patient's predictions and future demand to predict short-term turbulence, with the goal of informing proactive demand management strategies. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team across the Business School, Health Sciences and Engineering who will work and collaborate closely with stakeholders from acute hospitals in the region.

The MarEA Project (Maritime Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa) is a collaborative initiative led by the University of Southampton and Ulster University, in partnership with Oxford University. Our mission is to document and preserve the rich maritime archaeology of the coastal regions across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Researcher to join our team. In this role, you will contribute to the project’s success by conducting remote sensing research, collecting and analysing data across the MENA region, and supporting field surveys and training programs. This position will be based at the University of Southampton but will also require occasional travel to the MENA region.

Key responsibilities for the job are: 1) conduct research using remote sensing techniques and data collection methods across the MENA region, under the guidance of the project director; 2) Participate in ground surveys and contribute to training programs in selected countries within the project area; 3) Support the Principal Investigators (PIs) in achieving the project’s deliverables and advancing its objectives; 4) collaborate with an international team to ensure successful project outcomes.

Research Fellow in Smart Fibre Optic High-Power Photonics (HiPPo): Development of the Digital Fibre Laser

About HiPPo

Standard multi-kW fibre lasers are now routinely used in the most advanced production lines for cutting, welding, 3D printing, and marking of a myriad of materials from glass to steel. The ability to precisely control the properties of the laser beam and focus it on the workpiece makes high-power fibre lasers (HPFLs) indispensable to modern manufacturing. As we enter the Digital Manufacturing/Industry 4.0 era however, new challenges and opportunities for HPFLs are emerging.

The primary objective of the HiPPo project (Smart Fibre Optic High-Power Photonics, www.hippo-laser.co.uk) is to move beyond the “fixed” fibre lasers that are currently used in manufacturing, and towards “smart” fibre lasers that are automatically reconfigured and optimised in real-time depending on the application. This ambitious objective requires research breakthroughs across the spectrum of fibre laser development, from the development of new fibre core materials, to addressing limits imposed by SBS and TMI, to high-speed beam and polarisation shaping, to multi-channel kW level energy delivery, and finally using deep learning to solve the complexity challenge associated with coherent beam combination.

The role

Within HiPPo, your specific task will be to develop a ‘digital fibre laser’, through the neural-network control of a tiled array of fibre lasers in a coherent beam combination architecture, for unlocking novel power scaling and beam shaping capabilities in real-time. You will work at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (www.southampton.ac.uk/about/faculties-schools-departments/optoelectronics-research-centre) in a project team of eight PDRAs focused on delivering the next generation of HPFLs. You will have access to our state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities (www.zeplerinstitute.com/facilities), and be led by a team of world leading experts in the fibre laser and deep learning domains.

About you

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in an experimental discipline, ideally with experience in fibre optics and low-noise lasers and optical amplifiers, along with their practical implementation. Whilst this is a laser development project, awareness of deep learning techniques is beneficial as you will be working closely with deep learning specialists.

Research Technician
A research technician with expertise in fermentation and biofilm is sought to work on the development of biofilm for acid fermentation using waste hydrolysate. The post is funded as part of a PoC project on biomass waste to chemicals with CO2 fixation, aiming for negative carbon emissions in biorefinery. The main focus will be utilising the natural flocculation capability of a specific pure strain to form biofilm for platform acid fermentation, enabling sugar-rich hydrolysate-based fermentation possible for acid production and carbon fixation. The project will involve biofilm assays, fermentation, and inventory establishment for preliminary life cycle assessment. Developing bio-based platform chemicals from waste to replace or complement petroleum-derived chemicals is critical to moving towards a circular economy. The utilisation of CO2 as a co-substrate in this project will further support the transition to net zero.

Essential requirements

PhD in Bioengineering, (Bio)chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

Expertise and experience in fermentation using monoculture (using anaerobic or facultative monoculture preferred)

Capability of working under your own initiative while collaborating with the project members

The following knowledge, skills & experience is desirable:

Detailed understanding and knowledge of industrial fermentation

Detailed understanding and knowledge of biomass hydrolysis

Practical experience with fermentation in bioreactors

This multi-disciplinary project offers an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in exploring the interactions of microbial cells with each other and their environment.

The post holder will develop innovative approaches to define the mechanisms of chemical and physical interactions between cells that result in changes in gene expression, metabolism, cell morphology or even inhibition of competing populations. We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Research Fellow to work across all the research themes comprising ARC Wessex. The School of Geography and Environmental Science seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to work on a UKRI-funded project led by Dr Zoë Thomas, entitled “The View from the South: New approaches for understanding mechanisms and impacts of climate tipping points”. This project will pioneer the development of new proxies of wind strength and temperature records from the South Atlantic, using the latest technologies and interdisciplinary techniques.

The project aims to identify the relationships between southern hemisphere atmospheric circulation shifts and global climate tipping points. The Research Fellow will work on several tasks: (1) undertake laboratory work to generate new palaeoclimate records from South Atlantic peat sediments, (2) assemble and chronologically align datasets from the Atlantic Basin, and (3) undertake statistical and time series analysis to explore the latitudinal propagation of climate signals.

The post holder will have the opportunity, subject to starting date and travel restrictions, to undertake fieldwork in the South Atlantic during the post tenure.

The post is tenable from 1st October 2024 and is fixed term for 3.5 years.

The post will be based at the University of Southampton. You will be working with Dr Zoë Thomas in the School of Geography and Environmental Science, Dr Gordon Inglis in the School of Ocean and Earth Science, and a team of PhD students, postdocs and other collaborators based in the UK and overseas. Job criteria:

PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience in palaeoclimate reconstruction from sediment archives.
Detailed understanding and knowledge of the reconstruction of palaeoclimate from Quaternary sedimentary deposits using biomarkers and other multiple proxies.
Knowledge and experience of palaeoclimate laboratory methods for reconstructing climate from sediment cores using organic geochemistry.
Evidence of experience and aptitude in statistical methods for time series analysis and data syntheses methods.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and time management skills

Autistic adolescents have 3 - 6 times higher risks compared to typical adolescents to develop Mental Health Disorders (MHD). The aim of the European Commission and UKRI funded ETHEREAL project is to develop an AI tool that will help them to reduce that risk.

Recent research established a central role played by epigenetic-genetic-metabolomic interaction processes in determining mental health throughout the life particularly in genetically predisposed individuals. These findings lead to the following hypothesis and aims of ETHEREAL:

Hypothesis: Quantitative modelling of the Epigenetic – Genetic/metabolomic – Mental health (EGM) cascades will identify 1) the precise environmental factors causally responsible for transition of mental state of an autistic adolescent to MHD, and 2) their possible control mechanisms, and thereby 3) will provide a set of formal neurobiologically informed selection criteria of the most appropriate adolescent-centric evidence based intervention in autistic adolescents.

Vision: Designing an ecosystem to prevent MHD in adolescents with ASD by 1) empowering them to self-control their personal environmental risk factors whilst, 2) accessing proper evidence based interventions seamlessly in their “Personal Natural Environment” (PNE) improving their Quality of Life and independent living.

Aim: Quantitative characterisation of the EGM cascades and its integration into a personalised, flexible, single service delivery model for seamless access to care service in the PNE of an autistic adolescent empowering them to take preventive actions against MHDs. This will be done through the following four activities:

1: Identification of the environmental factors in the PNE of an autistic adolescent which instigate transition of their “mental health” to MHD (Model 1).

2: Quantitative modelling of the EGM process chain in autistic adolescents for designing control strategies based on their PNE, historical and current states (Model 2).

3: Integration of the Models 1 and 2 in the form of a Personalized Digital Nurse (PDN) mobile app, that will empower autistic adolescents to self-control the epigenetic influence of the factors present in their PNE.

4: Integration of the PDN with their PNE and the community care services and evaluation of the complete system informing the design of a personalized service delivery model (Model 3) based on Implementation Science principles for rapid uptake.

We are seeking highly motivated individuals who already have a PhD degree or are about to submit/have submitted their doctoral thesis to join ETHEREAL project to work on the Model 1 and 2. You should have worked in the area of dynamic system modelling with knowledge of signal processing and machine learning as all three areas are essential to achieve the aims. You should have a proven track record in at least one of these areas and are motivated to learn the other areas as per the requirement of the project. You will work in a team of electronics and computer scientists, clinicians, biologists and software developers. Very good interpersonal communication skill is essential.

We are looking for a motivated Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to work with Amrit Mudher and Phil Williamson developing methods to investigate how the cellular milieu influences the folding, structure and function of large molecular complexes including amyloid fibre structure and integral membrane proteins. This Leverhulme Trust funded project will combine the powerful genetic tractability of Drosophila melanogaster with the molecular resolving power of modern sensitive solid-state NMR experiments to report on the structure, dynamics, and function of these assemblies in-vivo.

The project will build on preliminary studies that have demonstrated that modern proton detected ultra-high field solid-state NMR methods can provide the necessary resolution and sensitivity to study the structure and dynamics of large molecular complexes in-situ in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. The project seeks to establish workflow that will enable the induced expression and labelling of macromolecular complexes and a range of NMR methodologies that permit the characterization of their structure and dynamics as well as interactions with other cellular components.

Ideally applicants should possess a PhD in biochemistry (or related descipline) and ideally experience in either Drosophila research and/or solid-state NMR. The position will be based in the School of Biolgical Sciences, which provides state of the art facilities for invertebrate research and solid-state NMR research (both locally and through the UK National Research Facility). Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) are now established as effective treatments for cancer, albeit with considerable potential for further improvement. The Antibody and Vaccine Group based in the Centre for Cancer Immunology in Southampton has a strong track-record in basic and translational immunology relating to developing therapeutic mAb for clinical examination.

We are currently running an extensive programme of research led by Profs Mark Cragg, Stephen Beers, Bjorn Frendeus and Sean Lim to develop new and more effective antibody reagents for cancer patients. The current opportunity is for a research fellow to join the team to help dissect mechanisms of action for mAb capable of manipulating immune and tumour cells to elicit powerful anti-tumour responses, with the potential for a direct impact on clinical development.

You will be motivated, educated in a relevant subject area and have practical laboratory experience of antibody biology and in vivo methodology.
